European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 22, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 12 a a a the stars and stripes tuesday january 22, 1991 Fetters a a if %. It w a. A a. A Viann Landers but proud of husband in Gulf for months i have watched the news television and followed the newspaper with the tear stained faces of those wives trying so desperately to be Strong while saying goodbye to their husbands before they depart for duty that will put thousands of Miles Between them. The television news footage at times almost seemed to be invading the privacy of those not Able to suppress their innermost emotions. My heart went out to these women who unknowingly showed they possessed a tremendous amount of support for their husbands by letting go of them so bravely. I Wasny to sure i could Ever do the same. Even though i Felt such great empathy for those women i had no idea whatsoever of How they were really feeling inside. The pain they had experienced prior to their husbands departure while attending Pom meetings to prepare wills and make sure life insurance and other Legal matters of concern were in order. The pain of telling their children their daddies were going away and knowing no one knew for How Long. \ when the Small unit my husband belongs to was one of the units singled out 1 thought a there must be some kind of mistake a but it was no mistake. This was it. The real thing. My initial denial was replaced with terror at the thought of possibly losing the Man i love. It was like the world had changed and nothing that used to be important held precedence any longer. How misunderstood those women had been by those of us who just did no to know know. I began to realize we were All in this together whether close neigh.-, Bors or far away a we All need each others support. No one else can Ever begin to understand our need to express our feelings and know we Are being understood and not just heard. Yes i am very concerned for my husbands life and i love him with All my heart but this is his Job. It is something he needs to do not Only because he is a Loyal Soldier but because he is a dedicated Soldier who has a tremendous amount of Pride in his country and what it stands for. He is willing to do whatever it takes to keep it that Way for us for him for All America. It is for him and soldiers like him that we americans can be very proud. A Cynthiia Harvey.
