European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - February 6, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 12 the stabs and stripes wednesday february 6,1991 letters to the editor Gentian mayor i was deeply touched recently when i had the Opportunity to say goodbye to a few soldiers of the Neu Ulm Community who were deploying to the Gulf to fulfil a Mission levied upon them by the unison of countries represented in the United nations. I can Well envision that these soldiers who. Are now in Saunor Arabia Sec televised documentaries from Germany which no doubt will fill them with bitterness As a result feel a Strong need to write you this letter. First i wish to make my conviction very Clear i.e., that the majority of the German people Are in agreement with one primary Point the american people and their government Itic peace just As. Any other nation on this Earth and even much More than some governments. A i we must Bear jointly however the fact that these Days a budding anti americanism is impetuously articulated and we. Must tolerate this Basic right to voice ones opinion and to abuse it. ,. I can Well imagine what you feel those who Are at the Gulf risking their their Well being when a per hear that 80 percent of germans in the face of this War Are led by fear. It is in my estimation a disgrace and those who Are far removed from the conflict area have Little reason to be led by fear unlike those who risk a their lives because they feel committed to a moral responsibility for Justice among nations. Nowadays when Many germans use fear As a moral aspect and wrongfully espouse this fear As their own Cardinal virtue it could possibly be explained by our sad and in Many ways infamous historical past during this a a a a a. / i know i am in agreement with All your fellow americans when i state our wish that the War in the Gulf which will bring so much suffering destruction. And death to so Many innocent human beings will be brought to an end soon. It is my sincere Hope that All your fellow military americans who Are deployed to the Gulf where they execute a most difficult Mission May return soon unharmed and Well. A or. P. Biebl uni . Gennav. A Berlin family offers its support this is from a German family that is thinking of All you american Scricc members in the Gulf arid especially of you family members who might have no one with you during this time. To Tell you something about us we arc Monika age 43michael age 43 and Audreas age 14 and have lived in Berlin since october 1989. We moved from Hamburg because Michael got a new Job Here. Especially in respect to Berlin we believe that the americans did a lot for this City and we also think that they do the same now for the free world. We know that there Are a lot of demonstrations in Germany against the War. Of course we Are against any it is alarming to see the amount of anti american sentiment now being displayed in Germany especially on television and by the social democratic party spa. During the first several Days of the War the German Ard and Adf television programs were extremely biased in their coverage of anti War demonstrations. The reporters were always careful to show american or israeli flags being did not see one single broadcast of a american demonstration even though these were taking place throughout the world the reporting on these programs has become somewhat less biased during the past few Days. The spa has been using schoolchildren Many of War As Well. On the other hand we know that this one could not be avoided and As we personally can do very Little we want to support an american Soldier in any Way possible. A. A a a a a a since the beginning of this War life has changed for us. We watch can television very often to be very close to the latest news from the american Side because the German stations do not seem to be informed in the Way that they should be. Too Many people forget that the War began on aug. 2 when Saddam invaded Kuwait and not when the bombing Iraq. Fortunately polls indicate the majority of germans support the . And the War. Kill them and the War will quickly end much As the people under the wicked witches Yoke quickly threw Down their arms when Dorothy melted their Subj Gator.
