A a some of their situations Are appalling. 7 last year a sergeant major asked me to look at some documents from a Mutual  which he had invested. One document was a letter advising him he had 30 Days to a change his mind about his investment. The letter was two months old and he could no longer be released from his agreement. He had invested si7,000 in a Mutual fund sold by investment Counselor who especially target the military. A a a. Of his $17,000, half $8,500 went to commissions and a set up charges. 1 explained to him that if he sold All of his shares immediately he would receive about $8,200, based on the current share value. He was shocked. He was further shocked when i explained the difference Between Quot Load and a no Load funds. The investment Counselor had never mentioned no Load funds. Nor had the Soldier been shown performance comparisons. Lastly the performance Chart he was shown did not exclude the Load he was paying. Of course this was explained in the Fine print. This is one example of several soldiers from sergeant to major who invested Large sums of Money in this particular Mutual fund. Without exception these soldiers were shocked when i explained their situation and showed them some Mutual fund comparison figures. My message is simple a do a Little research before writing the Check go to the Library and review the latest annual performance ratings of Mutual funds. These ratings Are published in financial magazines such As Money Magazine. Talk to people but not to other investors in the same Mutual fund. No one likes to admit mistakes.
