From the article titled a owners of delinquent vehicles sought a it might be inferred that a soldiers Pov which had been in the German port of Bremerhaven awaiting pickup Lor More than 120 Days would be disposed of through defense a utilization and marketing office channels. Nothing could be further from the truth. Soldiers who shipped pos to or from Europe and subsequently had their assignments changed and were sent to the Mideast need not worry. We will hold these pos until the soldiers or their legally designated representative inform us of the ultimate shipping destination. There arc routinely a number of pos that soldiers elect not to pick up for whatever reasons. Action to dispose of a vehicle is not initiated until the vehicle has been on hand without any communication with the owner for Over 120 Days. At that Point a process that frequently lasts up to six months or More begins. An exhaustive search is conducted to find the owner or lie Holder. Then a Board of officers and the staff judge advocate review the entire process to ensure a Soldier s rights have been protected before any disposal determination is made. Right now there Are 28 vehicles classified As abandoned at the military traffic management Comdr a vehicle processing Center in Bremerhaven a number that is lower than Normal. Of these 28, Only one is in the disposal stage. For the remainder Legal ownership is still being ascertained. Routinely no More than one or two pos Are disposed of in a year through demo channels. We also classify a vehicle As delinquent if it has not been picked up after 45 Days. What this classification really Means is that the records of the car Are passed to a special Section of the processing Center that is charged with locating owners. This Section is very successful at working with 1st personnel come and the service member Schain of command for pickup of delinquent and abandoned pos. Right now there Are 70 delinquent cars at Bremerhaven. As an aside we Are currently storing More than 425 pos for service Mem ers assigned to the Mideast. These vehicles which Are kept in a secured and lighted parking lot Are visually checked and started once a week a capt. Ray a.
