European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 11, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday july 11, 1991 the stars and stripes Page 21outdoor adventures the Hunt i just completed is the one that i had Long been reluctant to even think about a it was my last experience in Germany s forests for the Forshea ble future. I am moving to Virginia and this is my last outdoor column for the stars and stripes. Although i always have planned to eventually return Home to the United states just the thought of leaving the world of fir Trees with its Early morning Haze subdued streaks of Light and smell of living Moss has saddened me. The desire to enjoy Hunting and other outdoor fun in Europe has taken me from the Flat lands near Speyer through the Hills of Nieder Bayern and the Highlands in Scotland up some Steep ridges of the Alps and along some Clear streams of the Oberfall. And it All took me through nine years of writing the column and occasional articles in stripes Magazine. Just a few Days ago i put on those Blu chosen that Are falling apart one More time the shirt and old Wool sweater and dilapidated hat with its Hirsch Bard Brush made from mane of a red Deer Stag that no one can believe i still Wear. 1 headed for Potte Stet ten in the Obe Pfalz and got together with my old Friend George Windisch. George suggested i should go out by myself for an hour or so to wander through my old Hunting area just to reflect on the Many Good seasons that 1 had roamed what he called Dein Potte Stetten Wald your Potte Stetten Forest. I did As he suggested. I Slung the Rifle and Rucksack Over my Back and walked slowly through the Woods where i be spent countless summer and Winter Days walking sitting and relaxing. Then we met on the Forest Trail talked for a few minutes and headed for our individual hoc Hsitzu High seats to watch for wild game during the remaining hours of Daylight. Even though the Day was warm 1 knew it could Jurn Cool out there in the Woods so 1 took my Loden Cape. Before Long it was like and old Friend putting an around me. In the Hochwitz i sat and watched the clearings to my front and right. I used the glasses now and then. I saw a Hawk. All the colors were there. Sometimes fading then showing brightly always changing with the variations of sunlight. I listened. There were the familiar signs of Birds singing rustling leaves and Light breezes. It did no train but 1 remember thinking i care if it did. Because the Forest also is Beautiful in the rain. Being out there gave me the perfect setting to look Back at what has been a Good Opportunity. I watched and reflected. I thought about my a favorite things like Mountain Rucksacks my Hunting hat with its Hirsch Bard old Wooles actors my ice a heavy climbing boots my Berstock walking Staffanson Rhyn identifying wild game in the Fiel the bark of a Roc Deer the Call of a Hawk hammering of a Specht Woodpecker. The mixture of greens you see when looking out Over the top of a Pine Thicket a Snow covered Forest the colors of Mallard Drakes and hens and friends. There were some sad thoughts about leaving but they passed quickly. I thought about the walks the climbs the friends and the stories and How wonderful they All have been. All in All it was Good for me. After the Hunt but before we left my potty Nus to ten Wald George and 1 said our sad farewells to each other and headed Home separately. A Day or so later Back Home in Heidelberg. 1 dropped by the Rod and gun club with my wife. Gerda. We bumped into some old friends out there including a few Lake Caspe fishing veterans. We had some Good discussion which lifted my spirits tremendously. They offered their appreciation for some of the past articles on their favorite subject. They really knew How to make a Guy feel Good. Although i am sad that my evening near Potte Stetten was probably the last time 1 will Hunt in Germany for a few years i feel fortunate to have had All the enjoyable experiences associated with my outdoor adventures. From the Day they started Back in my childhood until that night at the Rod and gun club 1 have seen them All As a gift. The stare end stripes team invites Hull Colorado Springs Colo.
