Michael Kaplan president of the association of Organ procurement organizations in Washington ., saying the families of Organ donors do  to pay any fees whatsoever for Organ removal or transplantation. Kaplan was responding to several letters from readers who said they were no longer carrying Organ donor cards because a Friend or family member had been charged thousands of dollars after donating the organs of a deceased loved one to save the life of a stranger. Kaplan made it abundantly Clear that no family should be charged for Organ donation. If family Niem Bers Are mistakenly billed they should immediately Contact the association of Organ procurement organizations. The address is 1250 24th St. N.w., suite 280, Washington  20037. Although i thought that column was carefully worded and straightforward apparently the message did not get across. Also some papers did not print the column dear Abby i 1 it b dear Abby four years ago our son a Al a got his Girlfriend a Tara a pregnant. Tara was 15 and Al was 18 at the time. A week after our grand son was born Tara so parents kicked her out of their House so we took her and the baby into our Home where we lived happily As a family. As time went on Tara got pregnant again a also from our son a and when she became of age to Mariy without her parents consent she and Al selected a Date in september 1990. Al was a College student living at our Home with Tara and the babies. One month before the wedding Al was killed in an Auto Accident. During his funeral we treated Tara As his widow. Tara has since reconciled with her parents and she and her children have moved Back with them. She is now 19, but she does no to Date yet because she a still grieving for Al. A we Hope that one Day she will have a Normal life but she is not interested yet. She attends All of our family functions birthdays weddings,.christmas, easter mothers Day etc., just As though she were alas widow. Abby we feel that it May be an embarrassment to her when we introduce her As a Tara the Mother of our  since she and Al were never married she is not tech in its entirety and failed to run the response. The results have been catastrophic. The United network for Organ sharing which has 412 member institutions has been besieged with Calls from readers of that column who said they were tearing up their donor cards and wanted their names removed from the registry. When asked Why they replied a we did no to know that families of Organ donors had to  unos wants everyone to get this straight and so do i. There is no charge for donating organs for transplantation. It is the ultimate gift of life and is regarded As such. Families Are often unaware of the High costs involved during the final stages of trying to save a life. They sometimes interpret these charges As Organ removal costs. Any and All questions about Hospital Bills should be discussed with the Hospital administrator. My Canadian readers were equally confused. Please note that in Canada As in the United states the families of Organ donors Are not charged for Organ removal or transplantation.
