National origin age marital status physical Handicap political affiliation or any other non Merit actor of the purchaser user or out that debt the National debt keeps growing and growing. The amount is staggering and inconceivable yet it exists and our nation is in debt to the tune of trillions of dollars. What Are we doing about it giving handouts to everyone that a what. A Little earthquake Relief Here some famine Relief there a tiny economic Booster shot to the nation Over there. Enough whatever happened to the saying a take care of our own we have people starving and living on the streets in cardboard boxes yet we Send hundreds of thousands of dollars to feed the ethiopians people in America Are losing their families their Homes their towns to natural disasters All the time a floods earthquakes tornadoes yet we re sending Money to other countries for their disasters. We Are constantly placing ourselves further and further in the Hole to help out everyone else around the Globe when we ourselves need to be helped first. And How can we kill the National debt Well Here a a simple suggestion. So simple in fact that it will probably be ignored. Stamps have just been raised to 29 cents. Lets raise the Price again to 34 cents. Then take All those extra Nickels we make and throw them right into the giant chasm we Call the National debt. Done to reallocate the Money toward some defense program or some congressional project. Funnel it All toward the debt and it would be gone in no time. Lets face it everyone needs Stamps i know Many people object to the higher Cost if they knew they were helping get America Back on its economic feet. Sgt. Karl. Erikson Raf Alconbury England that has potential but personally i prefer the first Petro War. Its Snappy and has kind of a ?T90s, mtg sound to it. But whatever we Call it we should agree it was the first. The reason very Little has changed since a year ago. Saddam is still in Power and apparently Hasni to changed his ways much. The leaders in Kuwait and saudi Arabia Haven to changed much either. We certainly can to Call it the War for democracy in the Middle East r and most important the United states still does no to have a comprehensive National Energy policy allowing us to ignore the animosities and Oil politics of the Middle East. Our 5 percent of the worlds population still uses squanders 26 percent of the worlds annual Oil output and any time some third world despot decides to Park his army Over a significant portion of the world s Oil we will have to go to War again to preserve our lifestyle. When that happens the second Petro War will be As Good a name As any a Gary l. Dikkers Otterbach German editor s note via War by any name twelve months since Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and six months since the liberation and still we done to have a Good name for the War. That a not unusual though sometimes historians can to agree on what to name a War until years after. For example the civil War Wasny to called that until Early this Century. Before then it was called the War Between the states in the South and the War of rebellion in the North. The current names for our latest War Are largely unsatisfactory. Neither the Gulf War nor the persian Gulf War is completely accurate. This War was predominantly an air and land War and Only a very Small percentage of the fighting was in the Gulf. It makes no More sense to Call this War the persian Gulf War than it would have to Call the Vietnam War the South China sea War or the korean War the sea of Japan War. So what should we Call it let me offer some suggestions. Geographically the Correct term is the arabian Peninsula War. But that does no to come off the Tongue very Well does no to sound Snappy and a lot of people probably Arentt sure what a Peninsula is. We could Call it the War for the liberation of Kuwait. That s a Correct term but again its too Long and not Snappy enough. Plow about the War to Send third world dictators a lesson again too Long. There were elements of the War similar to the old Range wars in Wyoming where Rich ranchers would hire a Bunch of Gunt fighters to do their fighting and preserve their control Over water rights. So How about the arabian or kuwaiti Range War no too esoteric. I recently read that several historians have started calling it the first Oil War. Nuclear Power is clean and efficient but store the waste products in someone else a state. Highways and libraries should be improved but done to you dare raise my the facts Are simple. The pay raise was accompanied by reduction in income from outside sources thereby reducing monetary incentives for the shameless special interest pandering on Capitol Hill that we see now. Any step taken in this direction is a Correct one. Yes $125,000 a year is a very Good salary but in comparison with that pulled in by the average business Mogul who usually works with no consideration of the Public interest and sometimes directly against it pollution Etc its peanuts. Members of the Senate Are individually More vital to the affairs of the nation than members of the armed forces so any comparison of pay raise percentages Between the two cases is baseless. Docs private Snuffy impeach presidents confirm justices of the supreme court or regulate Commerce National intelligence or foreign policy no he she sweeps out the motor Pool. So Why should she he get a 23 percent pay raise because the members of the Senate did letters to the editor High paying career held attract people of More than average abilities. Why should the Job of . Senator be valued less highly than that of tax attorney or stockbroker we need Good people to run the country so we need to provide incentives for them to do it without prostituting themselves to pics political action committees and other special interest lobbying ploys.
