In the army when a Soldier has a baby she gets 45 Days of non charge Able leave. I realize that she needs this time to physically recover. However when a baby comes into the life of a male Soldier he gets no leave. I feel that a two week non chargeable leave would be very reasonable for these men except in times of a National Security threat. These first two weeks of a baby a life Are when the parents get to know it and All three can adjust to and recover from the. Birth. What other time in a woman a life is she going to need her spouse More physically and emotionally two weeks Are not a lot to ask and wives like me would be glad to have their husbands Home during this time. A Kathleen Anuci Vicenza Italy and the germans recognize that. While searching for housing in Frankfurt two years ago i quickly found it was to my advantage to immediately Tell prospective landlords i was in the air Force and not the army. Whether command sgt. Maj. Horvath realizes it or not Many germans have negative perceptions of gis and unfortunately that carries Over to their impressions of americans As a whole. The solution is not As simple As telling people who have noticed that and commented on it to get out of the army. And the solution will take More than a spot corrections by a few cos and officers. Part of the solution needs to be a command emphasis on education and Correct behaviour right from the top. In today a army it should be considered just As unacceptable to be rude and act like a boor As it is to be overweight or to fail a physical fitness test. A it. Col. Gary l. Dikkers Steinbach a Germany editor s note a rude gis a unacceptable another letter on a ugly americans a if you can stand it. I am proud to be an american but i done to take much Pride in the Way Many american gis and their families stationed in Germany act. Its True those gis represent Only a Small part of american society As a whole but unfortunately those gis Are what Many germans base their impressions of America on. Lets face it Many american gis done to give europeans a very favourable impression of american society. I done to know if the army realizes it a obviously command sgt. Maj. George Horvath does no to but Usa eur should be making a serious Effort to teach its soldiers a and their families a How to act. I suggest command sgt. Maj. Horvath spend a saturday afternoon at the Frankfurt military Community shopping Center. He Wilt see what i mean and have the Chance to make All the a spot corrections he wants. He will hear soldiers who can to put More than four words together without using the a of a word. He will see those who think its Cool to walk around wearing to shirts that say such things As a a what a your problem so head a there Are those who commit aural rape on the rest of society by playing their Boom boxes and car stereos at top volume. A walk through the Miquel Adick Sallee a Bahn station a the a Bahn station closest to where the majority of american gis in Frankfurt live a will reveal it to be the most trashed in All of Frankfurt. I have made a spot corrections a Tell someone to turn Down their music and they think their personal liberties Are being violated. Tell people wearing offensive to shirts they Arentt acceptable in Public and you will get Blank stares of mis comprehension. Tell a group of gis in a movie theater to watch their language and you can expect a flurry of a of a words and one fingered salutes. I commanded an air Force Squadron in Frankfurt for three years and routinely made off duty conduct and concern for the impression americans make on germans a Point of discussion at my commanders Calls. Does the army do the same i have worked closely with the . Army for the last seven years and have developed a fondness for the army and land warfare. Therefore i am really reluctant to open another Issue of controversy but for the Sake of american German relations 1 will do it. That Issue is my observation that american behaviour around army posts in Germany is worse than around . Air bases. I done to know the reason. I wont even speculate Why. Compatriots i believe the word a a accomplice better describes a partner in crime than in a sure you a agree that the robber must have had some Fine Law abiding and honest compatriots too. A sgt. Maj. Marcelino Malavet or. Ansbach German military standards this is in response to the letter a clarity is the writer alluded to the admissions standards for the Navy marines and air Force being higher for those services than the army. The recruitment standards for the armed forces of the United states do not vary for admission to that particular service. The standards for that particular service Are met and missed by individuals of All races. The armed services vocational aptitude Battery is Given to All enlistees of the United states armed forces. The particular occupational specially within the service May vary Seal air traffic controller. All enlistees Are Given a physical for their fitness to enter the armed forces. The allusion that somehow the recruitment standards Are lowered where minorities Are in great numbers is untrue and Point out the same argument cannot Fly aircraft Lead soldiers sailors used to justify keeping minorities from True equal Opportunity. The disproportionately Low numbers of non commissioned and commissioned officers in other services is not due to the a High standards perceived in our sister services. The adoption of a a level playing Fields will show that those with the ability to Excel will. Info Stu letters to the editor namely this is Only an idea that according to the writers findings is a very Long Way from becoming a reality in America As a whole and Usa eur in particular. For the record i have Brothers in the army Navy and air Force. A Cape David a. Gandy Friedberg Germany husband a unit thanked this is to thank All of the soldiers who helped the spouses of servicemen rulers deployed to the Middle East or Turkey. My husband was deployed to Turkey in route to saudi Arabia about a month after our daughter was born. During his deployment 1 was hospitalized and had some Legal matters to tend to in the states. I went to my husbands unit for help and guidance. The soldiers there Bent Over backward to make sure that everything went smoothly without any major problems. There was not a Stone unturned to assist me when i went for help. My hat goes off to capt. Kelly and sgt. Eazel. Whenever i called or stopped by the unit for their help they were there willing to do what they could. To the soldiers of cog 3rd aviation regt in Gie Belstadt my hat goes off to you. You have gone above and beyond the Call of duty. I just Hope that the spouses elsewhere have had a rear detachment staff As Good As i have. A Cheryl d. Williams folks Wurzburg . Health care in crisis Why in the greatest and most blessed country on the face of the Earth is Basic and decent health care not accessible to everyone who needs it it is due to the blatant existence of greed in All medically related Fields businesses and institutions in America including hospitals pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies health and malpractice insurance companies malpractice lawyers offices and yes even the doctors offices. Something needs to be done to right this travesty of the hippocratic oath and to Stop the bloodsucking in the Medico Legal profession. This is a National disgrace that must be dealt with now for it is no longer just a problem it is a crisis that Only the Federal government can resolve. In a not offering any solutions but feel strongly that there can be no Resolution without bold and courageous government intervention. Perhaps a study of the health care systems of Many european countries would be helpful in establishing some guidelines. A John h. Swift Offenbach Germany pen pals i am 19 years old.
