Helping an alzheimer a patient communicate takes patience and understanding. Some suggestions include a show interest in what the person is trying to say. A pay attention to the persons voice and gestures for clues As to what he is feeling. Sometimes the emotions Are More important than the words. A if the person cannot find a word offer a guess. A if you done to understand let the person know it and encourage him to Point or gesture. A ask one question at a time and give the person time to respond. A demonstrate your request by draw ing touching or pointing at things. A a a use non verbal communication to smile or a hug to reinforce verbal communication or to communicate when the person no longer understands words. When using non verbal communication remember to move slowly and touch gently. Do not startle. A smile can give reassurance. Always treat the alzheimer s patient with dignity and respect.
