As a career Soldier there have been Many instances when i was forced to perform duties that seemed to tear at my inner being because that a part of the Mission. I had nothing to do with the definition of the missions or some of them would have been very different. Mine was not to reason Why mine was but to do or die. Somehow i can relate to those former East German Border guards and As such feel that they have no business being on trial. These men were directed to perform a very dirty Job in a certain manner. Life for enlisted members in the East German armed forces was very difficult to begin with. No one in their right Frame of mind would want to make matters worse by failing to properly perform their duties As an East German Border guard. Besides there was an incentive for Quot successful handling of an incident. I cannot say with a Clear conscience that if i had been Young Andreas Kuehnast that Chris Gueffroy would be alive today. At the same time it would have torn me up inside to observe the incident and not be in a position to shoot Andreas Kuehnast in retaliation As a matter of policy. Now there is some serious conflict. Kuehnast and the three other guards did no More than what was expected of them. More research is needed to find the individual s who instigated the policies these men were trying to enforce. Put the Quot big wheels on trial and leave the a a snuffles Quot alone Quot snuff est Are the same in every army around the world they Only do what someone influences them to do. Whoever gave the deadly Force directives for the East German Border guards should be on trial instead of Kuehnast and his comrades. They did no to have a Choice. A sgt. 1st class Harry m. Braxtonjr. Augsburg Germany a gun nuts sickening the whining and whimpering of the gun nuts Over the last few weeks Are enough to make you sick. It seems some Brit called them All a Bunch of Cowherd and that elicited a flood of letters filled with the usual nonsense and illogical drivel along with a few xenophobic comments. One fellow asked a series of rhetorical questions intended to invoke fear in your readers and take their minds off the fact that the questions were ridiculous. He asked Quot what would you do if you found an intruder in your House a 1 ask Are you aware that most murders Are not committed by Quot Crooks but by relatives and acquaintances of the victim next he asks Quot would you ask him to wait a couple of minutes while you called the police a i ask would you ask him to wait a couple of minutes while you get your gun out of the locked Box where you keep it so that Junior does no to get his hands on it and blow away his Little sister 1 Hope you have enough brains not to leave a loaded gun lying around your House. He goes on to ask a would a criminal try to Rob someone on the Street if he knew he would get shot trying to do so 1 ask do you think criminals Are really stupid enough to let you gel your gun out of your purse or pants or wherever you keep it. The mugger has the drop on you guess who has the better Chance of shooting whom. He next states a gun Laws will not reduce crime. A criminal Isnit going to acquire a gun True they take them illegally from gun nuts. No Law is 100 percent effective. Should we just re peal All Laws and live by the natural Law of kill or be killed i done to think so. A master sgt. Floyd a. That you feel prayer is Quot demeaning to Mankind is your View albeit somewhat prejudicial. Tradition is a very powerful element in any society. Our National and state documents our Money and several of our beloved National songs All mention a god. To eliminate these references could be seen As an anti american act. It could also be damaging to the National psyche. If you do not personally believe in a god Why do you care if someone else does i do agree with you however that prayer should never be a poor excuse for action. 1 sure would like to have a copy of that invocation so that i could read what upset you so much. A a. Hoke Kaiserslautern Germany a non deployable trouble line the stars and stripes Apo 09211-4211.apathy fuels fires fact unattended cooking is the no. 1 cause of fires in . Government housing in Frankfurt. Fact in this year 19 incidents in . Government quarters caused by unattended cooking have occurred. This number far exceeds incident is. Population the number of similar fire incidents in the entire City of Frankfurt. Having been with the . Army fire department for almost 15 years i am still amazed How military families in Europe Lack common sense when it comes to Basic fire prevention measures in the Kitchen i.e., estimating How Long Oil or grease will take to heat. Even though they Are fully informed through fliers messages and stickers thousands of dollars in damage is still caused month after month. Public apathy plays a Large part in Why these fires occur. Personal behaviour must be changed so that individuals will know How to prevent fires and to persuade others to prevent and protect themselves from fire. Compared with other Industrial countries in the world the United states has the largest number of fires. Americans should be More responsible when it comes to fire safety. A Michael c. Eberlein Frankfurt Germany questioning writer in rely to the letter a unwanted prayer a were you forced to stand during this invocation or did you stand out of social pressure if you were As Quot morally offended As you claim Why not remain seated you certainly have that right. You Are Correct in your awareness that atheists Are in a minority. It is the responsibility of the majority to protect the minority from deliberate abuse. Do you feel the invocation was said to single out and abuse your particular minority View if so you need to Contact the appropriate complaint office. If however you were upset because somebody expressed an opinion in a Public forum that you did not agree with then you need to remember that As a minority opinion Holder you also have responsibilities. Part of those responsibilities Are to exhibit tolerance and show flexibility. In your letter you have shown neither. Public intolerance bigotry and expressions of anti religious feelings Are destructive to our multicultural racial and religiously pluralistic society. Your confusion Over the Church state Issue is classic. Our government neither mentions nor implies that Public prayer is threatening to american society. Of months ago concerning the release of non deployable from the military. I truly Hope that the first thing that the military does is take a look at the individuals who became non deployable and the reason Why. On oct. 22, 1990, i was involved in an Accident while Riding my motorcycle the other party involved ran a red Light and crashed into my motorcycle at a High Speed. This resulted in my spending 3w months in a . Hospital learning How to walk again. During this time my company received orders to deploy. Let me Tell you of the anguish and the guilty feelings that 1 had for not being part of this deployment. Let me also Tell you of the contempt 1 would have had for myself if just one of the people i worked with did not come Back. I Pray that the military does take a very Good look at their non deployable and the reasons Why they Are non deployable. If they have the kind of limited eyesight that this writer had then they will be condemning a lot of Good personnel to a life of no Hope or no Joy because any civilian company that takes a look at the medical records will decline their applications.
