Only 16 of the 41 cars that started the race were still running at the end after nine cautions for 70 laps. One crash involved at least 16 cars but no serious injuries were reported. The wreckage also dented Dale Earnhardt s Lead in the season Points race As Ricky Rudd closed it from 64 Points to 36 with six races left. For almost the last two thirds of the race nobody could touch Gant who made it the least competitive Winston cup event since Kyle Petty lapped the Field in winning the May 1987 coca cola 600 at Charlotte . He led 326 of the last 330 laps taking the Lead out of the pits on Lap 171 during a caution. He stretched his Lead continually Over Wallace and pole Sitter Alan Kulwicki. Coming within 1.6 seconds of lapping the Field by Lap 267, a caution on Lap 281 helped Kulwicki close the Gap. But a crash soon changed that. Earnhardt was running fourth when Kulwicki.
