European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 17, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 6 the stars and stripes tuesday september 17, 1991 suicide rate jumps 21% among those 65, older by Malcolm Ritter a science writer new York a rates of suicide by americans 65 and older jumped 21 percent Between 1980 and 1986, rising 42 percent for Black men and 23 percent for White men a Federal study says. The increases followed a drop in suicides by older americans Between 1950 and 1980, researchers said. The reasons for the new trend Are not Clear although increases in social isolation and longer lives with chronic illness May have played some role or. Richard Sattin of the Federal centers for disease control in Atlanta said. Sattin co authored the study. The increases occurred before recent publicity about doctor assisted suicides and this year s publication of a Best Selling suicide manual. At the time the study was done Sattin said in a Telephone interview data for 1986 were the most recent available. Updated Federal figures for 1990 show a a 4 percent increase Over 1986 for people Ages 75 to 84, a a 6 percent increase for americans 85 and older. However there was an 8 percent drop for 65 to 74-Ycar-Olds. For statistical reasons however it is not Clear How these changes compare with trends in the new study. Or. Dan Blazer a psychiatry professor at Duke University medical Center who studies suicide among older people said he had expected some increase but not As Large As what the Federal study found. A it s a pretty Sharp increase Over a pretty Short period of time a a Blazer said adding that he could not explain it. The study appears in this month s Issue of the american journal of Public health. It reported that nearly 37,000 americans 65 or older killed themselves from 1980 through 1986. Researchers said that within this age group the suicide rate Rose from 17.8 suicides per 100,000 people in 1980 to 21.5 suicides per 100,000 in 1986. White men had the highest rates. They Rose rom 37.2 suicides per 100,000 White men More Effort needs to be focused on programs that reduce social isolation that provide older people an outlet if they Are depressed a or. Richard Sattin 65 or older in 1980 to 45.6 suicides per 100,000 in 1986. For Black men the rates Rose from 11.4 per 100,000 Black men 65 or older to 16.2 per 100,000. White women 65 and older showed a 17 percent increase to 7.5 per 100,000. There were too few suicides among Black women to produce a meaningful trend Sattin said. Firearms were the most common Means of suicide used by 73 percent of men and 29 percent of women. Sattin said it is not Clear what kinds of programs would curb suicide among the elderly and he called for More research into the area. A More Effort needs to be focused on programs that reduce social isolation that provide older people an outlet if they Are depressed a he said. One possible program he said would be suicide hot lines for the elderly like the ones in operation for suicidal youth. Divorced and widowed men showed the highest suicide rates among the elderly so perhaps programs should focus on them he said. Although youth suicide has captured much attention experts say suicide rates among older americans Are higher. Federal figures for 1990 show 13.6 suicides per 100.000 population for people Ages 15 to 24. The 1990 rate for people Ages 65 to 74 was 18.1 per 100,000, with 26.1 per 100,000 people for Ages 75 to 84 and 22.5 per 100.000 for people Ages 85 and above.
