A red Barber took Maris 61st in stride red Barber was never one for broadcasting with naked emotion so 30 years ago tuesday on a sunny fall Day when Roger Maris hit his 61st Home run off Tracy Stallard of the red sox Barber did not let the moment move him. Speaking recently by Telephone from his Tallahassee fla., Home Barber remembered his Call for Pix a there was a restaurant Man in los Angeles who announced head give $5,000 for the Ball if and when Maris hit it. When the Ball went into the lower right Field seats i described it with the fewest possible words a sixty one Home runs and $5,000.?T a that was All As Barber let the action speak to viewers. A the camera had the picture of the people jumping up and Down fighting for the Ball and Maris going around the bases and then coming red Barber out of the dugout Tak ing his Cap off. I always Felt on to the fewer words the As Yankee stadium rocked Barber held steady. ?o1 did no to have any emotions about it at All a he said. A i just described it. I tried to be a reporter to involve myself in the game. I did no to Barber was alone in the Pix Booth at that moment in the fourth inning while Phil Rizzuto was in the radio Booth. The scooters Call has survived the years and accompanies the remaining archival film clip of the Home run. A there comes Roger Maris a Rizzuto said with a higher timbre of voice than he has now. A a they re standing up waiting to see if Maris is i tried not care who going to hit no. 61. There a the Windup the pitch to Roger Way outside Ball one. And the fans Are starts ing to boo. Low Ball two. That one was in the dirt. And the Boos get louder. Two balls no strikes on Roger Maris. A a Here a the Windup. Fastball hit deep to right. This could be it. Way Back there. To Lee cow Roger Maris. To Lee cow what a shot. Another standing ovation for Roger Maris. Sixty one Home runs. And they re still fighting for the Ball out there. People Are climbing Over each others backs. One of the greatest sights in be seen Here at Yankee Rizzuto has never been one to mask his feelings. A when he hit it i yelled so loud i had a headache for 10 Days after that a Rizzuto said. A i broke the record for holy cows. I done to think anybody understood my words. I was screaming. The Only other Day i had a headache was when i got my first Mel Allen who was Between stints in the radio and television Booths was without a microphone at the moment but his Call would certainly have been dramatic. A i stood up and roared when Maris hit it just like the crowd a he said a because it was so unprecedented like Don Larsen a perfect Curt Gowdy was the voice of the red sox in those years and called the game on Whdeh radio. Just a year before Gowdy had called Ted Williams a final Home run in the players last time at Bat at Fenway Park. A this was the Only excitement left for me because the red sox were Way out of the Pennant race a Gowdy said of Marisa a no. 61. A when Maris connected you could Tell it was going to be a Home run. As it was in the air i said a it looks like Roger Marisa a 61st Home run and it has landed in the right Field seats. Roger Maris is the leading single season Home run hitter of All then 1 shut up and let the crowd take in that crowd of 23,154 spectators was the mull family of Connecticut William and his sons Robert 6, and James 8. Williams 8-millimeter camera was Fhy Phil Rizzuto went a who lec cow Over the Home run. Whirring throughout the game and recorded Marisa a historic Home run in color. Earlier this year after his fathers death Robert reviewed the film and transferred it to videotape in june he got in touch with the mag network the Yankees Cable outlet. The network bought it last week. It was the first major league baseball game Robert mull had attended. A we sat 15 rows behind third base a said mull a project manager for an architectural firm in Redondo Beach Calif. A you can see Roger in his second at Bat take two balls then hit it out. My dad follows him around the bases and then pans the crowd. You can see the no. 4 train As it passed and the fan who jumped onto the Field. You Sec Roger striking out the next time up and in his final at Bat he fouled a Ball off that just about knocked the camera out of my dads hand it was so j Tow new York to film Harwell bids favorite Ballpark a fond Adieu Harry Atkins a sports writer a Detroit a it was a Sweet warm autumn night. But the 11,824 fans made the air shiver monday with their cheers As they bid Farewell to Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey doing their last broadcast from Tiger stadium. The fans Rose spontaneously before the Start of the seventh inning turned toward the broadcast Booth and gave a Long ovation As Harwell began his final three innings from the Corner of Michigan and Trumbull. Harwell a career in Detroit is being ended after 32 years by the team and War am. Carey will retire when the season ends sunday in Baltimore. The emotional evening began even before the game when fat Bob Taylor the singing plumber from Ann Arbor dedicated his version of the National Anthem to the pair. When he came Back on the air Carey said a i know that the game makes the broadcast and not the other Way around. But this game is special. So i Hope you la forgive us if we reminisce a Little More than usual during the course of this and they did. During Detroit a 8-3 Victory Over the Baltimore orioles Harwell recalled the names of All the great players he has seen in a tigers uniform. He classified them by position. Toward the end of the broadcast Harwell seemed to become a Little flustered. During the Detroit eighth he said a the count on Whitaker is 8-and-l. I mean 2-and-1. The score is 8-to-l.? at the Start of the ninth the fans began to chant a Ernie and Paul Ernie and Paul a Many of the fans had transistor radios. Harwell invited them to stay tuned after the game when he promised he would have some special comments. Reading from a prepared statement this was Harwell a Farewell a Well the last game is Over Here and goodbyes Are never easy. In be said a few in these final games and my final Tiger season and tonight id like to say so Long to this old stadium because Well have another time in Baltimore to say the final so Long. A it was Briggs stadium when i first began to broadcast for the tigers in 1960. The next year or. John Fetzer changed the name to Tiger stadium but either Way its always had a special place in my heart. A Tiger stadium has been my Home away from Home. In be spent As much time Here As i have in my own family room. In be Frozen on those frigid nights in april and in be roasted during those hot afternoons in july and August. And for More than 25-Hundred Tiger Home games in be sat in this chair and talked into this microphone. A a nobody a Ever had a better place to work. In be been so close to the Field i could see the players sweat and hear them cuss. The players have come and gone and the names of the stars have changed Over the years. But you know the real heroes of this stadium Are the Loyal workers who have loved this old Ballpark Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey acknowledge fans cheers at their last Home broadcast. And nurtured it for so Long. So tonight i want to Salute those workers and i thank them. They be made Tiger stadium a great place for me and for All you fans. And lets remember All the worx and the dedication they put into this place. Vve la All miss this stadium but ill always cherish it in my heart and in my mind and it will live in my memories forever. A so its Good Bye for the last time from my favorite of All ballparks Tiger after Carey finished his nos game show he closed with this Farewell a a it a going to be Tough thinking about this place. Its been just wonderful to me for 19 years to broadcast games from the Best Vantage Point in America perched right behind Home plate a Little bit to the first base Side. But we be got six More games to go. A i want to Salute this stadium. Its a Beautiful place. I first saw baseball Here in 1936 and Tommy Bridges got beat by red ruffing and i cried All the Way Home to mount pleasant. It wont be the same coming Here in the capacity As a Spectator but i will be Back. A this is Paul Carey saying so Long from Tiger stadium. Once again the final score the Detroit tigers 8, the Baltimore orioles 3.?
