And his approach to addressing the problems of racial discrimination is most Welcome. If the tactics that Fletcher have used help to Wake people up to the racist sickness that continues to plague our society then we must applaud him in his efforts. If some people such As David Owen Are tired of this Type of approach then they too should join the struggle to make our society what it was meant to be. Its too bad this writer does not understand the True effects of racism. Civil rights leaders have tried about every tactic possible throughout the history of the United states to bring about racial Harmony. None seems More effective than one who employs both National and International Media As a sounding Board. The gains the Black Community has achieved Over the past 40 years have not been because Blacks sat Back and waited for some sort of handout nor were they the result of some White Leader feeling sorry for Blacks and magnanimously making the change. It was the moral conscience of Good people White and Black who pushed for change. These people knew that when White and Black America worked together for True Equality then in the end there would be Only America. The old racist tactic of giving Blacks a Little bit to keep them quiet and Happy until you give them a Little More is a thing of the past. African americans have earned the right to be treated like citizens in All aspects of american life twice Over and should not Settle for less. So do not presume that you know what Black leaders should be saying. And please done to become indignant when they do or say things that displease you. Although you May look at men such As Gen. Colin Powell and supreme court nominee Clarence Thomas As Model Black leaders one must remember that these men Arentt civil rights leaders. However they arc products of the civil rights movement. Look around your Community. What is there to do for teen agers who Are not athletically inclined teen agers in Europe Are trapped in a non supportive adult environment that has nothing to offer them in the evenings except a rated theater movies. There should be a teen Center in every major military Community that can support healthy Active children and teens in activities that arc age appropriate and fun. Teen centers can focus on teen problems and give teen agers support and a place of their own. It would give teenagers a sense of importance in the Community a willingness to be responsible and a forum for creative problem solving. When communities offer nothing for teen agers to do evening after evening they May come up with inappropriate activities of their own. Yes parents Are responsible and care what their children Are doing. Even adults can go stir crazy after spending evening after evening at Home no matter How creative Home evenings May be. Teen agers want to be with other teenagers in whatever Community activity will accept them. Unfortunately that is the movie theater that shows a rated movies Friday and saturday nights. Lets give the kids a place of their own staffed by people no understand the amount of emotion and turmoil that can build up in a teen Ager and activity directors who can direct Energy appropriately. Teen agers Are a valuable resource that communities have not tapped and have decided to Call nuisances rather than Community members. If you really want to see if discrimination exists in Germany ask a teen Ager of any color. Almost every Day i hear about How television and other forms of Media Are corrupting their kids. I am the youngest child of six and also a child who grew up without a father. My Mother almost single hand edly raised her family without the assistance of her spouse. In doing this she had to work very hard at Home and at work. This meant my Brothers and Sisters quite often were exposed to the obscenities of everyday life to include the various forms of Media. My Mother did not shelter us from these things. Instead she tried a different approach an approach that some of you conservative parents might try. My Mother educated us on the Good and bad things in the world today. I knew what was right and wrong and i did at a very Young age. To this Day i thank my Mother. She prepared me for the world she knew i would eventually have to confront. She could have sheltered me like so Many other parents but then i would have never known what to expect. Parents ignorance is a far worse enemy than any form of Media. Stop blaming the Media for your Lack of parenting. Teach your kids to know right and wrong. If you continue to keep your children sheltered from the bad things then what do they have to compare with the Good things these Are what morals Are based upon. A staff sgt. Lawrence d. I believe this includes not just the letter of the Constitution but its ideals As Well a and that these ideals should be defended for All Peoples. As an american service member i letters to the editor was ashamed of the attitude with which some members of my military unit received news of the coup attempt in Moscow in August. The hard line crackdown stunned and saddened the world. Here it was greeted by some of our members with cheers such As a Hooray we have a Job again a and other More descriptive expressions of appreciation of the conspirators. I feel that service members who Are pleased to watch a nation of 300 million souls ground under the Boot Heel of totalitarianism simply to justify their own jobs in the military espouse a paradigm counter to the ideals of the Constitution they Are sworn to protect and defend. Thank god the coup failed. And thank god the threat to our constitutional ideals from outside is steadily decreasing. Not Only was the training the Best in be Ever received but the professionalism and knowledge of the instructors is beyond reproach. Or. Merkl and or. Hernandez clearly set the standards for technical training. Its Clear to see both instructors dedicate themselves to teaching not just a lesson plan but a thorough understanding of a vehicle. The whole atmosphere at 7th cat could be considered a role Model for other training courses. The environment set by 7th cat made learning virtually automatic.
