By John Millar Wurzburg Bureau Wurzburg Germany a sometimes spec. Glenn Stewart gives schoolchildren Candy. Other times he yells at them. Some Days he does both a it depends on which bus he rides. Children who ride to american schools in Wurzburg from the town of Gunter Sleben on bus 26 a Are most All officers kids mostly quiet and easygoing a Stewart said. They Are Likely candidates for Canay. Bus 28, which takes children to school from the town of rim Par a has its Good times and its bad a then we have bus 4, the bus from hell a the Little kids whose parents feed them caffeine for breakfast a he said. A they enjoy spit wads and beating on each Stewart does most of his Yelling on bus 4. The 23-year-old Greenwich Ohio native rides one of the three school bus routes almost every Day. The duty is part of his Job As buildings and grounds coordinator for the installation managers office on Faulenburg Cavern in Wurzburg. Normally stewarts Cavern caretaker duties Range from planting Flowers and shovelling dirt in the summer to raking leaves and shovelling Snow in the Winter. But the office he works for also overseas the bus Monitor program for three of 97 school bus routes that carry american children to and from department of defense dependents schools in Wurzburg and their Homes in outlying German towns. The program which was launched in Wurzburg in 1988, requires soldiers and civilians to ride school buses periodically to ensure that children get to and from school safely. Bus monitors fill out reports after each ride that document Misbehaviour by the children or carelessness by contracted bus Drivers. The Drivers Stewart said Are responsible Only for driving not the children who ride. A we try to prevent trouble so the Driver can keep moving a he said. There Are about 35 people a from colonel on Down who Are on the bus Monitor duty roster for the three routes covered by the Faulenburg installation managers office Stewart said. The problem is Many done to show up for duty a stewarts co worker spec. Juan Arroyo said some Are prone to have car trouble on the Way to Monitor duty. Doctors appointments Are suddenly scheduled and children become sick when bus Monitor duty comes up he said. Regardless of the excuse Arroyo said the majority of those who done to pull the duty Are higher ranking officers and civilians. Gs-12s arc always sick a said Arroyo who drives monitors to the buses and picks them up when the ride is done. A the lower ranks do it because they re afraid of what the higher ranks will do if they done to show up Quot he said. Whatever the Case when the Monitor on duty is away Stewart is the one who fills in. Stewart said he is the a of jail Safe when monitors done to show up for the duty and he a Ridden All three routes countless times while filling in for absent monitors. He knows most of the children on each bus by name. And they from High school seniors to Kinder partners know him All too Well. On a recent october school Day pupils on the Gunter Sleben bus cringed when Stewart warned them he would ride the bus in the afternoon if they gave the regular Monitor a hard time on the Way to school. A a he a mean a one student said flatly. A most of the kids know me and they know i done to put up with much a Stewart said. A i keep them quiet and keep them in their seats and keep them from acting like the biggest problem on the bus is a kids moving while the bus is moving and kids screaming at the top of their lungs at their buddies right beside them a Stewart said. The latest menace to bus order is the Popper a Small hand held device made of folded paper that emits a loud a a pop when operated by youngsters. Those Are minor infractions Stewart said with offenders usually getting off with a Stern warning or a note to their parents. A a major incident would be fighting or bringing a weapon on the bus a he said. Those offences could result in being suspended from the bus. For the most part Stewart has to Deal with children whose Only offence is having an overabundance of Energy a like those who ride bus 4. The route is the shortest of the three taking approximately 11 minutes and 15 seconds to get from the elementary school on Leighton Barracks to a government leased apartment Complex in a suburb of Wurzburg called Lengfeld. But it is also the wildest with Many of the youngsters singing playing hand clapping games and Yelling like riders on a roller coaster. And though he yells More on bus 4 than on the others Stewart understands Why the kids Are so Rowdy. A you have to look at Lengfeld Quot he said about the apartment Complex which has Only a Small play area and is surrounded by Busy streets and Industry. Quot the Only place they have to expend that kid Energy is on the Stewart said the Ideal bus Monitor would have some Type of combat experience especially to ride bus 4 he Hasni to seen any combat but figures he has the right military specially to do the Job. He san infantryman. And although he a strict in enforcing bus rules a when the kids behave i Reward such was the Case recently when he prepared to Board a bus on a Friday afternoon armed with Only a bag of Candy. Conduct on the bus Wasny to perfect he said but Good enough to warrant some Sweet incentive to do better. And a he said Quot you know what in a going to Tell them after i give them the Candy and they say a thank you a in a going to say a be quiet a a
