David h. Hackworth. The author of the 1989 Memoir a about face a he covered the persian Gulf War on assignment for Newsweek. Hackworth not demeaning our Victory in Southwest Asia warns americans not to be deceived into believing that the War was a True test of our Complete military capability especially of our soldiers in the Field. I recently attended a combat psychiatry lessons Learned conference and listened to a desert storm brigade commander recount his involvement in combat. He showed typical slides of the desert burning iraqi tanks and destroyed military equipment. He boasted about blasting enemy Armor from distances of four Kilometres saying that in most instances the iraqis never even saw his tanks. The colonels review of the ?o100 hour War showed just How rapidly it was Over with minimal loss of life and equipment. Throughout the week i listened further to medical statistics reflecting the number of casualties evacuated from Southwest Asia for this and that reason to include psychiatric problems. The figures were minuscule compared to what could have been overwhelming numbers. For the most part we know the total number of deaths was incredibly Small with a Little More than one fourth of these from Friendly fire and accidents. Clearly by most accounts we ultimately engaged a demoralized army on the ground that did not want to fight. I worry about the same things Hack Worth does and then some. Politicians should not be deceived into thinking we Are so capable that the Pentagon budget can be Cut to the extreme of leaving us less prepared should a real War arise. Military experts be deceived into believing we can easily commit ourselves anywhere in the world and always win. Americans should not be deceived into boasting the Gulf War Victory Means might is always right. My greatest worry is our Young men and women May glorify War to the Point of believing they Are invincible. Agreeing with Hackworth i believe the ultimate lesson Learned in this War fortunately or unfortunately is that we have to think hard about the next one. A maj. David a Koskela Heidelberg Germany Yugoslavia destruction this letter is in response to the article a yugoslav forces rain shells on historic Reading the article about the killing of croatians and the destruction of the invaluable historic Sites All Over the country and i mean Croatia As a country in a just wondering Why the Usa and the rest of world does not take any real action with consequences for Serbia. When Kuwait was invaded by Iraq the Usa jumped up immediately and took some severe action. We said that we wanted to save the poor people from Saddam Hussein a ooh yeah a and then there is that whole business with the Oil and Money. People Are dying in Croatia too. Historic Sites Are smashed destroyed for Ever. Croatia declared itself Independent As a state and is getting invaded. Why does no to anyone do anything where is the Usa As a Helper of the poor and oppressed a it inevitably leads me to the conclusion that our Brave soldiers died in desert storm Only for the Sake of Money and not mainly to save the people. Thinking about that makes me very sad. A Katja Suess Karlsruhe Germany editor s note a letters from readers expressing their viewpoints or opinions Are published daily in this space. The reason Why there is some of it left is mainly through the efforts of organizations like the w.w.f., National wildlife nature conservation Audubon society Greenpeace defenders of wildlife the Cousteau foundation and others. We As members of a few of them along with with our Ever growing number of members have for years contributed successfully to the survival of wildlife and Protection of the environment not because we have to but because we want to. In your Case you have to pay a or no Hunting License. By. Abston Owci Brincken Germany a a medical come dress code not too Long ago the 7th medical come commander began to enforce the directive of All 7th medical come soldiers not being allowed to Wear the class a a by uniform or the class a pc Quot Hospital duty uniform. I think there Are Many problems with this new directive. First of All we think that the wearing of class a a by and Hospital Whites present a cleaner image and is More professional not to mention More comfortable to Wear. As a patient it is difficult to Tell who is a patient or who works at the Hospital when the medical Soldier is wearing bus Battle dress uniforms. The Hospital White uniform is an organizational Issue item. Many Hospital workers come in Contact regularly with various body fluids stains and acids. If any of these Are acc Dently spilled on their uniform they can turn them in to Supply for reissue at no Cost to the Soldier. Soldiers will have to replace bus using their clothing allowance. We do not have a problem wearing bus when the situation is appropriate. Our clothing allowance is not enough to replace the bus when they Are soiled with blood urine stains or acids. We do not want to take them Home to Wash them in Public washing facilities either. I question whether the infection control people would want this hanging Over their Heads. According to ar-670-1, chapter 3, when speaking of occasions for Wear of the bus it states a these uniforms Are issued As Utility Field training or combat uniforms and Are not intended to be worn As All purpose uniforms when other uniforms Are More i cannot think of a More appropriate place to Wear the Hospital White uniform than a Hospital. A staff sgt. Mitch Childress Augsburg Germany a thanks for helping hand i recently was try temporary duty in Heidelberg with two of my co workers. We were Well supplied with a navigator Mea map a in fact two maps a however we managed to get lost. We finally came to a military installation. To and behold we met three of the nicest most helpful military policemen in the world. These Guys were cheerful helpful and made our mistake seem like a very Small problem. Moreover they made the three of us feel Safe and in Good hands. I Hope if they read this they will accept our thanks and gratitude. We were extremely Lucky to have been found by those three Guys. Thanks to those who made the phone Calls to find our hotel and a big thanks to the one who led us to our hotel safely. My friends and i were much better land navigators on our Way Home. A Phyllis Rowe Grafe Wohr Germany a difference in favourites i take Strong exception to the College football fan writers cheap shot at baseball fans saying that he agrees with Afna a decision to stay with the Washington California College football game in lieu of cutting to the world series game. In the first place an has provided the Best possible coverage of All sports in an attempt to please everyone. The respective fans have their own preferences and some fans think that their Choice of sports should have priority Over other fans preferences. Second the writer Felt Safe in stating that a football fan would rather watch a football game As opposed to any baseball game. It was his opinion that football fans far outnumber baseball fans. Regardless of who outnumbers whom if the shoe was on the other foot in a sure he would want to see his favorite sports playoffs instead of the regularly scheduled programs. His favorite sport was in regular season. Our sports season was playing its championships. When football is in its last Days of the season and two of the Best teams Are playing to see who is number one in the nation i Hope that a regular mid season game from another sport is shown instead. Then the football fan would have the Chance to see things from another fans Point of View. By the Way did no the know that baseball is called americans favorite pastime a sgt. Jack e.
