Legislature passed a welfare Reform package that would Cut payments to women who have More children while on the Dole and could eliminate benefits for people who refuse Job training. If approved by gov. Jim Florio and the Federal government the package would make new Jersey the first state to deny Grant increases to welfare mothers who have More children. Several other states Are considering such a policy and Many financially strapped Stales have moved to reduce their rising welfare costs. Florio has not said whether he would sign the set of six Bills approved by the Senate on monday although he supports welfare Reform in principle. The Assembly approved the package last week. Florio has until Jan. 23 to decide. A i think the governor sees this As a total package a said the Bills sponsor. Assembly majority Leader Wayne Bryant like Florio a Democrat. I expect that the governor will give it his Best  the Bill on welfare mothers was the most contested. Benefits now increase $64 for each additional child. That would Stop under the Bill but mothers could work and earn the extra income without losing their original benefits. The first vote was ,14-4, seven Short of passage. Bryant and two Florio advisers went to the Senate to lobby for support and a half hour later the Bill passed 22-4. John Russo a Democrat was among those swayed.
