The roots of the City can be traced to 1000 b.c., when celtic tribes established fortifications on or near the site of the present fortress overlooking a fishing Village on the River below. Franconian people took Over the Hill and the area around it in the sixth Century and it is widely held that the Church they built there is one of the oldest Christian churches this Side of the Alps. Throughout Wurzburg s history a when there was t a War going on a the fortress was being reinforced modified beautified and expanded into what is seen above the City today. The Majestic fortress offers a glimpse of How the former Prince Bishops of Wurzburg lived in a truly Royal setting. The fortress also houses the franconian museum of the Mich which includes a wide Range of displays from Armor and weapons to artwork and fossils. Much of the Castle s looks particularly its massive baroque bulwarks can be attributed to Wurzburg s master architect Balthasar Neumann. His Mark can be seen in Many of the most impressive architectural works both in Wurzburg and the surrounding Region. It is his likeness along with the fortress on the new German 50-Mark Bill. Also on the Bank note is a View of the resident of the Prince Bishops of Wurzburg one of Neumann s greatest architectural feats and without a doubt one of the most popular attractions in the City today. Much of the City s baroque Quot looks Quot can be attributed to the Prince Bishops of the Shonborn family who were great fans of the arts and admirers of Neumann. They were not alone Neumann s architectural skills were admired and much in demand by just about everyone in Southern Germany during the mid-18th Century. Work on the sprawling resident began in 1 719 by order of Prince Bishop Philipp Franz von Schonborn. Its spare no expense Interior incorporated frescoes from famed venetian Painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and a huge ceiling mural tops off the grand staircase in the resident built for Wurzburg s Prince Bishops. Noted sculptor Peter Wagner. One of the building s most impressive features is the grand staircase. Wagner s sculptures Itne the two flights of stairs and an immense mural by Tiepolo covers the ceiling. The mural is about 60 feet by 105 feet and is according to the City tourist office the largest painting in the world. It depicts scenes from what were considered the world s Quot four continents Quot at the time a Europe Asia Africa and America. What All this Means is that like the fortress the resident is nothing less than a magnificent work of Art inside and out. Just As Neumann s architecture can be found All Ever the City so can the gothic sculptures of Tilman Riemenschneider who carved his Way through the City starting in 1483. Among his most noted works is his version of Adam and eve in St. Mary s Chapel image Kapelle in the City s Market Square. The sculpture is not Only Beautiful but also daring. Completed in 149 3, it shows Adam and eve almost totally nude something unheard of at that time.
