It is still open today and is one of Only two establishments left in Wurzburg where patrons can bring in their own food and eat it with plates and utensils provided by the restaurant. Maul Uffenbeck can be identified by a sign hanging Over the door which depicts a Monkey drinking a Glass of wine. It s about a half Block from St. Mary a Chapel Marie Kapelle in the Central Market Square. The huge gothic Church has its own unusual Story. The Cathedral known As the townspeople s Church stands on what once was a synagogue which was surrounded by the City s jewish neighbourhood. Dettel Bacher said townspeople burned the Temple and jewish Quarter to the ground in 1349. There Are several theories As to Why this was done he said. A one is that the jewish Community was an affluent one and Many in it often made Loans at High interest rates. By burning Down the neighbourhood the loan documents As Well As some of the lenders themselves were destroyed. Another theory was that christians in the town believed the jews were evil since they were somehow immune to Many of the diseases that struck Down much of the population during the time. Some went so far As to say the jews poisoned Well water and holy water because they were not affected by Many of the deadly ailments of the time when in All actuality they simply had higher standards of Hygiene and clean living than others of that Era making them less Likely to fall prey to diseases such As the plague. Regardless of Why it happened the ruling Prince Bishop at the time was outraged by the destruction of the jewish Quarter if for no other reason than that the prosperous ones paid healthy taxes. To punish his subjects Prince Bishop Gerhard von Schwarzburg made the townspeople build a Church on the former site of the synagogue. However Dettel Bacher said the Bishop gave no completion deadline for the Church. The angry people took heir time 99 years building the Church. The town folks displeasure of the Bishop can be seen in the sculpture above the main Entrance to the Cathedral. Titled judgment Day the sculpture above the ornate doors depicts common people moving left to a Church that symbolizes heaven. To the right wealthy upper class people Are moving into a dragon s Mouth that represents hell. Among the figures about to be eaten by the reptile is the likeness of the Prince Bishop. This dislike for the Prince Bishops and the ruling class according to Dettel Bacher Quot was pretty much the Case throughout the City s however the upper class at least thought it could use the princes to its advantage. In 1466, Dettel Bacher said the City Hierarchy selected 65-year-old Rudolf von Scherenberg As Prince Bishop with the expectation that he would soon die. In those Days Dettel Bacher explained top City officials were allowed to mint As Many new coins As they wanted from the time one ruler died and another was placed in Power. Approval of newly elected Bishops had to come from the Pope in Rome a process which took about six months. So City officials figured they d a amps file the opulent lifestyle of the Prince Bishops flaunted in their ornate resident did not always sit Well with the people of Wurzburg. Have that much time to get Rich minting coins when the elderly Scherenberg died. Wrong. The plan backfired Scherenberg lied to the Ripe old age of 95 and outlived All of those who put him into Power. One of Wurzburg s most prominent historical figures St. Kilian has his own unique Story but one that Isnit told in most City brochures. The guidebooks say Only that three Irish missionaries Kilian Kolovat and Tot Nan a died martyrs deaths in Wurzburg in the year 689. What Thev Don t say is that the three religious men were ordered beheaded by a woman. The untimely demise of the three missionaries occurred when Wurzburg was part of the franconian kingdom Dettel Bacher said. The Juke of Eastern Franconia ruled Wurzburg a position he readied after his brother the previous Duke died. In taking the throne the new Duke also took his brother s widow a a Gail Ana to be his Bride. There was no blood relationship Between the couple Dette Badier said and the marriage normally would t have been a problem in those Days it it weren t for Kilian. The Irish apostle was in Wurzburg to convert the population to c christianity and was Quot excessively strict Quot in his beliefs Dette Badier said. Kilian disapproved of the marriage and insisted the two to divorced. But Gail Ana was used to her position of wealth and prominence. When her husband the Duke went olt to Light a Small , she seized the Opportunity to secure her future and had the three missionaries beheaded. It was the death of Kilian but not the end. He eventually became a Saint had a Cathedral named after him and his statue is among i 2 standing atop the old main Bridge. It.
