Like Many service members my wife and i save aluminium cans paper and Glass bottles which we Deposit in the Vogel Weh exchanges recycling dumpsters. Do you know what we see when we visit these dumpsters plastic bags of these items stacked High around the dumpsters. Apparently Many people Are too Lazy to actually put their collections into the dumpsters. I imagine these people think they Are doing their part by just collecting these items and believe the person who picks up the dumpster will also collect the bags surrounding it. I bet not. Probably these bags Are eventually thrown away and the efforts of the original collectors Are for nothing. In the meantime we have a Recycle dumpster area that looks like a Pigsty and adds to the common German belief that americans Are nothing More than Lazy jitterbugs. I applaud you if you care enough about the environment to collect items suitable for recycling. But please go that extra step and put your items into the dumpster. A capt. John c. Shuttee Ramstein a Germany a a replace rfcs wisely l am writing in response to your recent article titled . Studies plan to Speed up ban on Ozone killing chemicals.1?T i think this is finally a step in the right direction that has been a Long time coming. Even though a phaseout of rfcs by the year 2000 seems to be a slow process i realize that a replacement product must yet be invented. I am 16 years old and appreciate the worldwide approach to solving Ozone depletion. But i Hope it is accomplished in such a Way that when i am 26 or 36 we wont and out that insufficient research was done in finding the of Csc replacement so that a whole new set of world threatening environmental problems is the result. A Sarah Russo High Wycombe England a who really won the War i heard a report on the radio about How great we Are doing by moving into phase Iii of operation provide Comfort. This phase is supposed to show Saddam Hussein our resolve to protect the kurd of Northern Iraq. Through our actions Saddam Shoula know he needs to apply a a hands off policy with the kurd. I hate to burst the Bubble of nationalistic Pride but it Isnit working. Slowly Saddam a troops have been moving North with their artillery and feeling us out As they move. His artillery has been shelling kurdish towns causing families to flee in the extreme cold temperatures of the Countryside. Just before Christmas i spoke with a Man who Heads a medical support organization that did a tremendous amount of work in Northern Iraq in the Early Days of operation provide Comfort. One of the warehouses his organization filled with medical supplies and equipment for the kurd took a direct hit from iraqi artillery in december. The warehouse and All contents were totally destroyed. Has our open press reported these activities yes in tiny articles hidden away in the bowels of the newspaper occasionally. What has been our response to All of this nothing. The United nations is practising the policy of appeasement with Saddam thinking he will be More compliant. We can see How effective this Nas been. Iraq is refusing to comply with . Sanctions regarding Oil production revenues and the monitoring of arms production and purchases. What Are we doing nothing. An appeasement policy was applied with Hitler. We remember How effective that was. Why do we continue to Send our forces into the Gulf Region if we Aren t going to use them against the forces that refuse to comply with the terms Laid Down by the victors of the Gulf War who was the real Victor a it. You need to get your priorities straight. While appearance is important we should be primarily concerned with How Well we perform our duties and treat our fellow soldiers not How shiny our boots Are. If an enemy attacks i really done to care How Good you look but How Well you shoot. A pfc. Micki Feldman Frankfurt Germany a a waiting the Mac Way for years in be told soldiers not to take Mac flights because of a bad experience i Haa in the past. Well it came time for me to pcs permanent change of station. I wanted to Fly to Philadelphia to save my brother a lot of driving time picking us up. Mac offered a flight to Philly so i decided to give the system another Chance. Our scheduled flight was to depart Frankfurt at 9 45 . On feb. 8. Of course it did no to the plane Wasny to even in Frankfurt yet. Incidentally its 7 15 . On the 9th right now and our plane still Isnit Here. Rather than go into detail ill say this. The terminal is still under construction a it looked the same last june when i took my Captain to Frankfurt. Snack machines provide the Only source of nutrition after the truck closes at 2 . Little children stood in the freezing fog for More than an hour waiting for buses to trickle in to take us to a hotel. We kept getting erroneous information on when our plane would arrive to get us out of Here. Please improve your service Mac. There a a lot of upset service families in Here right now. When you look Good service families feel Good about themselves and the service. Save the a Grin and Bear it Quot replies with All the great past statistics because i wont be around to read them. Well on second thought maybe i will. Now its 8 45 . And we were just informed that we might get bused to Cologne or to another hotel for the night same Story As yesterday. I wish someone above the rank of major were Here to see these faces. Its our own fault. We just picked the wrong Side the Airport. The other Side has be Busy All Day. A first sol Phil Cateryna Ansbach Germany a a parents key to education Andy Rooney was right on target when he Laid the blame for americans poor education squarely on the students and More important on the parents. I am firmly convinced that no amount of Money will help our education system without the involvement of parents. I went to a Small school and had 25 students in my graduating class. We had no computers and no labs and our Library consisted of several Large piles of books. Very few students Ever went to College or even reached functional literacy. Despite All this my parents demanded that i get an education. My parents checked my Homework quizzed me and talked to my teachers frequently. The end result was that i was Able to enter College and graduate four years later. The same Story applies to my four Brothers one sister and millions of other americans. So parents do not Lay the blame on teachers get involved. If you do not provide a stimulating environment for your own children do not expect others to do so. And College is not the Only goal to set for your children. Becoming literate assets to our society with life skills to provide for themselves should be goal enough.
