European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - February 22, 1992, Darmstadt, Hesse By Ron Mckinney staff writer even though she represents Germany in world class ice dancing Jennifer Goolsbee still considers herself red White and Blue. The 23-year-old figure skater from Grosse Pointe Woods mich., is so dedicated to her olympic dream that she was willing to relinquish her american citizenship to skate for Germany in the Winter games at Albertville France. But that was not to be. Goolsbee and her German ice dancing partner Hendryk Schamberger were not quite ready at least in the eyes of the German olympic committee which decides such things. Goolsbee and Schamberger who placed 17th at the world championships last year thought they had earned the right to olympic glory by winning the German championships last november. The skaters were Given the bad news while eating dinner at the closing banquet last month at the european championships in Switzerland. Their 10th-place finish was the Best among the germans but not Good enough for the olympics the National olympic committee had decided. Germany would not Send an ice dancing team. Quot it was very poorly handled Quot Goolsbee said Quot they had led us to believe that we would go. They waited until the last Day of the european championships to Tell Goolsbee and Schamberger train four hours a Day at Oberst Dorf Germany the same compound where this year s olympic Silver medallists the French pair Paul Duchesnay and Isabelle Duchesnay Dean train but for Goolsbee the pre olympic buildup involved More than just time on the ice. The Brunette with the soft Brown eyes also had to prepare to give up her american citizenship. And that decision was t an easy one Goolsbee said she turned to her friends and relatives for support. However not even her parents recommended she give up her passport. Quot they did t encourage me by any Means a she said. Relinquishing her citizenship could present Sticky problems. Goolsbee could always return to the states As an immigrant but then she d have to get a Green card and wait five years to get citizenship again. That is if her parents a Holland 70, and Rosemarie 58 a sponsored her. Quot if they die there s no Way i could get it Back Quot Goolsbee said. Quot i would be on a waiting list for years. Most kids Don t think of their parents As dying but in my Case i have Schamberger did t pressure Goolsbee although he too had a great Deal at stake. Like Gool sneer a parents Schamberger supported her either Way. Quot it s a hard decision a she said. Quot if the tables were turned what would he Schamberger do there s not really in Pursuit of Jujj Jujj Jennifer Goolsbee will make nearly any sacrifice including her citizenship for her olympic dream an Goolsbee said that even if she gives up her citizenship Quot ill always be an american in my Quot if i was to do it i would t think of myself As an immigrant. I was bom there. I was raised there. I went to High school there. Quot that a not to say i could t adapt to the european Way of life. I really like it Over Here. I like living in Goolsbee who began skating at 6 years old came to Germany after her ice dancing career had reached a plateau. After finishing 13th in the 1989 . Nationals with her third partner in As Many years Goolsbee was advised by judges to find a stronger partner. She knew of Only one and he was in Germany. Goolsbee and Schamberger met at an International seminar in 1988 at Oberst Dorf and stayed in Contact when she returned to the states. Then Schamberger lost his partner at the same time Goolsbee gave up hers. A on August 13, 1990, she was on the ice with Schamberger in Oberst Dorf for the first time. Their styles meshed together from the outset. Quot the american judges even told me it was a Good move Quot Goolsbee said. But there have been other hurdles including adapting to a new lifestyle. Although Schamberger Speaks English fluently As does their Trainer Martin Skotnicki Goolsbee knew from the beginning that she would have to learn German if she was to train year round in the country. A it really bothered me when i did t understand what they germans were saying. I hated it Quot she said then there was the Little matter of adapting to the european dancing. Quot most americans have a different style than the european teams Quot Schamberger said. Quot our first couple of months we tried to find a style compatible to both of Quot i think you have More internal control As a Jennifer Goolsbee and Hendryk Schamberger train in Bavaria.
