Welfare should not be increased it should be decreased. For example an e-5 makes approximately $300 a week. Out of that is food clothing and child care if any. In Pennsylvania for example welfare is $299 per week plus food Stamps. Why should anyone work All these soldiers getting out of the military should just move to Pennsylvania and collect welfare. No wonder so Many people done to work. Welfare gives them More Money than minimum wage. Even at $5 an hour with a 40-hour week its Only $200. Yes thanks to americans welfare system its no wonder Japan says we Are Lazy. A Donna Mahoney Frankfort Germany tribute to fellow soldiers i would like to thank the writers and staff for the Fine article on the 2nd army Cav regt stationed in Iraq published in sundays edition feb 23for several Days prior to your article the events that led to the deaths of four of our troops had been on my mind. I served As platoon sergeant in k troop and our platoon was the one the enemy Force ran into that morning of the 26th february 1991. Ill never forget that night the Date the names and faces of the men that were killed and wounded. Unlike Vietnam this War was too Short and our losses too Small for me to forget. My experience in Vietnam was too Broad and Long for me to remember dates and All the names. I Only remember the faces and the places where our men fell. Again thanks for the reminder on our first anniversary of the persian Gulf War and that peace and Freedom Arentt free. A sgt. 1st class Gregory a. Young Amberg Germany teaching Israel a lesson i find it amusing that the writer of a disappointing Effort March 6 blames the state department for doing what it should have done years ago stand up to Israel. Its ironic that the writer should consider the Call for a curb on settlement in the occupied territories As a a stunning Lack of the real Lack of pragmatism was our previous policy of backing any israeli position no matter How unreasonable it was. Israel needs to learn that Compromise is part of the negotiating process. I also believe that the strategic importance of the Gaza strip and the West Bank has been grossly exaggerated. History has shown that Israel Nad no problem defending itself prior to annexing these territories. Any future palestinian entity could exist Only if All players involved agreed to create a Neutral or at least demilitarized state and in a sure Israel would insist on a Security zone. Such a state would be subject to intense International monitoring and peacekeeping efforts. Should All these measures fail to deter aggression against Israel . Resolve to defend the jewish nation remains an unquestionable deterrent. In a tired of Security being used to conceal israelis obvious Agenda of creating an israeli majority through jewish settlement and Arab deportation. In a tired of being pushed around by a country that owes its very existence to . Support. But most of All in a tired of stubbornness preventing peace in the Middle East. I applaud the state departments new found courage. A Chi. James r. Salisbury Ambach Germany Elvis does no to belong Why put Elvis Presley on our Stamps in my opinion someone else or something else should be on the stamp. Done to get me wrong he was a great Man to some people but to me he was a bad influence. Why should we put someone on our Stamps who died from drugs someone like Martin Luther King Mother Teresa or Malcolm x would have been a better Choice. Who recommended him to be on the stamp i did no to. A spec. Johnny Seawright Kitzinger Germany editor s note a letters from readers expressing their viewpoints Are published daily in this space. Such letters should be addressed to readers action line the stars and stripes unit 29480, Apo a 09211.armed to teach i am writing in response to the letter a no instant teachers. A contrary to the writers assessment the proposal by sen. Sam Nunn d-ga., for retired service members to become teachers is an indication of the High esteem he holds for both professions. Frankly the writer owes every military person an apology As he implies that we Are Barbaric warmongers incapable of teaching children about life and the arts. The military is a Cross Section of our society. Within it you will find poets doctors writers artists musicians and the like. The Only difference is that for now we Are serving our country in the profession of arms. When that obligation is done we return to society a As poets writers artists musicians and yes even teachers. Some of u came from the teaching profession before we entered the service and even More of us will take up that profession once again in service to our country. A David Castillo Hahn a Germany a a army making strides Many people sit around and complain about How bad things Are but fail to see the truth. In the real world jobs Are Given to people because of race or sex. Some refuse to accept others because of the color of their skin. There Are White people who discriminate against Blacks but also Blacks who discriminate against letters to the editor Whites. I think people should be hired solely on the basis of qualifications for the Job at hand. Many people believe that discrimination is still prevalent in the army. I strongly disagree after working in a battalion command Section for just under a year. There Are those who Are going to Call me ignorant but i believe most equal Opportunity complaints Are unfounded. The to system is a vital part of the smooth operation of today a army. If we All Start to work and live together in peace and treat each other As equals i think the results would amaze even the most cynical among us. A Timothy j. Mccormick Kom Westheim Germany Candor appreciated you Are probably going to get a lot of flak Over the article you ran on March 2 about sex staff sgt. Gerald Wood. It was a sympathetic article about a Guy that the army chose to throw out. Many will say you print such things. I want to compliment you for having done so. There is always the suspicion that there is some a party line that the stars and stripes must adhere to. Articles like the one on Wood do a lot to dispel that suspicion. I will also admit that while i understand his being dismissed for what he did Many of us agree with what he said. A it. Col. Ret Paul s. Renschen Karlsruhe Germany a Cis deserves . Help i think its time to answer the shortsighted people who keep writing in to berate the United states for sending assistance to the Commonwealth of Independent states claiming that by so doing we Are neglecting the hungry folks in America. Do they Call spending $30 billion to $40 billion a year on welfare and food Stamps neglect if we fail to water the fragile roots of democracy in Russia the resultant explosion could turn into a global catastrophe. There Are still 30,000 nuclear missiles in the Cis. Lets get our Heads out of the Sand and feed the hungry Bear. A Roger Runyan Fulda Germany pen pals i am 30 years old and i Enoy american football.
