The Only obstacle Between an estimated 10,000 pro communist demonstrators and the Tomb of the unknown Soldier were hundreds of riot police. It was feb. 23, soviet army Day and it had evolved into an angry confrontation Between people and government a rapid decline in living conditions had sparked the rally. Before the Day was Over it would be described As the scene of the most violent unrest in Moscow since the fall of the soviet Empire. Ten police officers and an unknown number of demonstrators were injured in clashes. In China in 1989, such demonstrators were mowed Down by gunfire. Such action would t have been unthinkable in the old Russia either. Today in the new Russia voices can be heard and they Are filled with anger and frustration disgruntled residents push through a Side Street toward red Square.
