Once again there was an abundance of outstanding Talent. However the big and Small schools tournaments were held the same week again this year and that hampered things and i was somewhat limited in coverage. Fortunately i was Able to see 24 different teams play this year and cohort Rob Staggenborg covered the big schools tournament while i was in Baum older for the Small schools showdown. Rob had made really important contributions. And the thing that really aided and abetted the cause was the input from the coaches most of whom came through with flying colors. Especially appreciated was the data on outstanding players on the opposing teams. Doubtless there will be people who wont agree with the selections. That kind of disagreement occurs twice every school year in december when the All Europe football team is announced and again this time of the year when it becomes basketball s time. Every player considered for All Europe had to be nominated by his or her coach and Only this years accomplishments figured in the selections. Six girls a Heidelberg a Carolyn Kirsch Frankfurt Saundria Sparrow International school of Brussels Georgia Bottoms Munich a Tami Malone Ramstein Smika Brown and Augsburg a Tarshia Bronner a return from last years squad. They were the prime candidates for player of the year but Brown Bronner and Malone played on teams that did no to fare too Well and the pendulum swung towards the other Trio. Sparrow won last year As a Sophomore when Frankfurt captured the big schools tournament. Bottoms was Ben Abrams on a championship team last year too but she had an All Europe teammate in Masquida James at Brussels High school and it was deemed that Sparrow had to achieve much More by herself at Frankfurt. James was Back again this year but she was injured Early in the year and missed almost All of Brussels Campaign. She had started off in a going to repeat style and the injury deprived her of the Opportunity of becoming the first basketball player to hit for the circuit a win All Europe recognition As a freshman Sophomore Junior and senior. This year Kirsch and Bottoms were both on championship teams and the one particular Masquida James thing that swung the pendulum in Kirsch a direction was that she won most valuable player recognition in the big schools Competition while Bottoms missed out in the Small schools balloting. Selecting the boys player of the year also was tedious. Brindisi a Vaidre Chilton was the Only returning All Europe performer and he enjoyed another outstanding year. So did a Oesterberg a Jason Cole and Burnell King and Munich a Atila Barlas to mention Only a few. But Heidelberg a Lamar Cox had a franchise year. He did it All As Brad Shahanz a Lions who were Low rated when the season began made Many people sit up and look As they won the aaa and big schools championships. Selecting the coaches of the year was about As difficult As it Ever has been a there were so Many outstanding performances turned in. The girls Edge went to Heidelberg a Rich Bennett on the strength of his lady Lions aaa Champi by was a on ship and Victory in the big schools tournament Over a very Strong Frankfurt combo which coached by Karen Snyder the 1991 selectee and prime candidate this year too. Other Strong candidates included International school of Brussels Ron Parham Bonne a Dayton Mcaloon Alconbury a Phil Campbell Vicenza a Joe Pellerito and Hahn a Tom Richards. A Oesterberg a Jim Cole won coach of the year recognition for guiding the Falcons to their first Ever Ben enor regular season championship into their first Ever Small schools tournament with a second place finish at the Northern regional and on to the smal schools title with a thrilling Victory Over Munich. Heidelberg a Shahan was a Strong challenger to Cole for the Job he has done in bringing the Lions Back to respectability. Not regarded very highly in no they posted a 21-4 record in the aaa championship and winning the big schools tournament. Other outstanding coaching performances were turned in by Nurnberg a a Danny Robinson Munich a Tom Willett shapes Jim Garvie who was the stars and stripes coach of the year in football last fall Brindisi a Larry Scott and Naples Ken Harvey. The Star and str Paa reckoning they posted route to capturing preseason All Europe from Page 20 Board numbers Over the Campaign which saw Heidelberg Post a 21-4 record. King and Justin Cole gave Oesterberg a potent inside outside attack which resulted in the Falcons tremendous Success. The team advanced from 0-12 to 7-9 to 18-4 Over the last three years. King handling most of the inside duty averaged 16. 3 Points and 9.6 rebounds a game and Cole who connected for 28 three Point goals during the Campaign finished with 14.9 Points and 4.3 assists a game in addition to his Tough defense. A these two players really made everything possible for us a Jim Cole said of King and his son Justin. A without their play it is highly doubtful that we would have been Able to even Challenge for the titles we the Jim and Justin Cole tandem is the first father son combination Ever to make All Europe. Archilla topped All Dodds boys in scoring and rebounding with 23.8 and 18.4 numbers while leading Naples to second in the american schools m Italy tournament. A Dan is the Best player by far that i have had in my six years at Naples a Wildcat Mentor Ken Harvey penned. Barlas wrapped up his fourth year at Munich by scoring 19.3 Points a game and grabbing 15.3 rebounds both tops on the club which finished second in both the Southern regional and the Small schools tournament. Whitaker was about All that Hanau had going for it. He averaged 22.9 Points a game and pulled Down 10.6 rebounds. Dial was intimidating As Niernberg enjoyed its Best season Ever. He averaged 20 Points and 12 rebounds and was credited with 47 blocked shots in an 18-2 Campaign that included a double a title and big schools runner up for the eagles. Chilton labelled a the ultimate player who does everything Well by coach Larry Scott was the big gun in Brindisi a March to the Asil tournament title and a 20-2 record. He averaged 14.6 Points while Shawn Parham Tami Malone Cory Whitaker Aundria Sparrow shooting 54.6 percent from the Field. He also had 10. 4 rebounds 5.4 assists 3.3 blocks and 2.8 steals a game. Balistreri was called a the Best True Point guard in Europe because he did what a Point guard is supposed to do distributed the Ball to the open Man or score if he is not defended a by Mannheim coach Daryl Ward. That he fulfilled his responsibilities is verified by the fact that Balistreri led All Dodds players with 11.8 assists a game and also found the Basket enough to Post an 18.6 Points per game Mark. Shawn Parham Ron a son who attends Brussels High school was or. Versatile for Brussels playing at one time or another All positions on the court. His principal assignment was at guard where he averaged 18.1 Points 12.6 boards 4.2 steals and 3.8 assists prompting coach Cork Conner to write that a Shawn is the Best player in the Small schools of Europe.
