Their gathering place is Madame Tussaud s scene Rama a combination historical museum Wax figure exhibit and audio visual entertainment Center on Amsterdam s dam Square. Scene Rama is a vibrant High tech attraction a giant improvement Over the usual Wax museum format. The curtain Raiser for the exhibition is the 15-foot-tall Amsterdam Man a giant animated recreation of a 17th-Century dutchman who appears out of a smoke screen of liquid nitrogen. The figure lectures visitors in several languages about Amsterdam s Quot Golden age Quot when a far Flung trading Empire made it the wealthiest City in Europe. With various items sprouting out of his body and clothing a a Windmill a sailing ship a wooden door a painting a Amsterdam Man is intended to represent various aspects of the City s life and history. It is a feature designed to immediately get the attention of the viewer. And it succeeds. After the introduction the exhibit takes visitors through life size dioramas of a 1 7th-Century Amsterdam neighbourhood Complete with a Sailboat on a canal a Battle a skating party a merchant s Home and other representative scenes from the past. Rembrandt s studio is also depicted. This is history at its most vivid enhanced by computerized animation and Light shows that Are state of the Art. Not All of the history presented in scene Rama is of Distant times. On the upper level the setting takes a quantum leap from the 1 7th into the 20th Century. The most impressive of the modern Day exhibits is a re creation of the 1969 Moon Landing Complete with Neil Armstrong describing his Quot giant leap for Mankind As lie sets foot on the lunar surface. The exhibit s final Section is a conventional Wax museum with depictions of figures from entertainment politics science and Art. Some Are Mure realistic looking than others. Margaret Thatcher and Martin Luther King fare Well but president Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev do not seem quite themselves. Madame Tussaud s scene Rama is an excellent place to spend an hour with the family. Be forewarned that there is one exhibit that depicts a Lynching and Dise Bowling.
