European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - April 9, 1992, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday april 9, 1992 the stars and stripes a Page 7radioactivity linked to 45,361 Sites by the Washington Post Washington a More than 45,000 locations nationwide including factories and hospitals Are potentially contaminated by radioactivity a study says. The eight month study commissioned by the environmental Protection Agency did not attempt to quantify the health risks at any location or the degree to which radiation May have reached groundwater and crop lands. The authors concluded Only that emissions from the material a ranges from Levels approaching natural background to highly radioactive liquids and researchers based their findings on a Survey of All available records of locations at which radioactive material was used stored manufactured a or spilled. Most of the material cited in the study derives from uranium Mill tailings or refuse from nuclear weapons plants and other facilities operated by the department of Energy or department of defense. Not All of the Sites identified Are definitely contaminated. Many of the 45,361 locations in the Epa study Are not Likely to be dangerous officials said. Nearly 20,000 of the Sites Are owned by the Federal government. Previously unreported Sites of potential contamination include the agriculture research Tenter in Beltsville my. Government scientists there used radioactive materials to simulate the effects of atomic weapons fallout on crops in the 1950s or 1960s. Nuclear weapons accidents in new Mexico new Jersey and Utah were also reported for the first time according to an Independent expert. Although the Epa has had authority to clean up radioactive waste and limit Public exposure the Agency has never issued regulations governing the disposal or cleanup of the material. The study by a private consulting firm was commissioned in 1990 to determine the scope of the problem. Michael Shapiro the Epars Deputy assistant administrator for air and radiation said the study indicates the a Large universe of potentially hot Sites but a May Lead to greater concerns than is warranted. Because a single weapons Complex May contain hundreds of Sites of pollution he said the total number May appear to overstate the problem. Still environmental activists and congressional staff members who have seen the Epa draft report said it underlines the need for the Epa to set cleanup standards for contaminated Sites and Issue regulations to enforce them. The Epa draft which is scheduled for release at a Senate governmental affairs committee hearing today is being reviewed by the . Nuclear regulatory commission. The arc plans to release an a action program for cleaning up radioactive contamination at 46 Sites under its control some of which arc on the Epa list.
