If sufficient support is not forthcoming by february 1993we would feel compelled to ask Congress to reclaim the site and return any remaining funds to donors said Maurice a. Barboza president of the Black revolutionary War patriots foundation. We will suffer a tremendous Embarrass ment. There will probably not be another memorial built on the National he said he needs the Money pledged by february and in hand by next october. The memorial is planned on the nation Al mall near the reflecting Pool Between the Lincoln memorial and the Washington Monument. It will Cost an estimated $4.8 million to build but the foundation is seeking $6 Mil lion to cover any Cost increases caused by inflation. The foundation has raised Only $800,000. Barboza said major Black corporations have not responded to solicitation letters. The group needs to raise about $500,000 per month to meet the goal. Ideally we would like to raise All the Money in $1 donations from 5 million car ing americans who see themselves As mod Ern Day patriots in a statement. Barboza said he was inspired to build the memorial in 1984 after his aunt Lena san tos Ferguson became the second Black woman admitted to the daughters of the american revolution. The foundation was established in 1985. Congress approved the plan to build the Monument in 1986 and the site in 1988. Barboza and Ferguson also a member of the foundation said they believe the Monu ment will offset the failure of educators and historians to teach and publish books that Deal fully and honestly with the Posi Tive role of Blacks in the nation s formation. Only one of the 110 memorials in the nation s capital is dedicated to a Black Ameri can educator Mary Mcleod Bethune. The memorial will Honor about 5,000 Black civilians soldiers and sailors who served in the american revolution from 1775 to 1783, As Well As the tens of thou Sands of slaves who ran away to Freedom. Situated on one acre on the mall the me Morial would include two inwardly curving and rising Walls that form a below Grade paved Plaza. The North Wall made of Bronze will depict men women and Chil Dren. The South Wall made of Granite will contain the etched words of Black patriots. Redesigned German Money issued in 3 denominations Frankfurt Germany is the Ger Man Central Bank on tuesday issued the last three in a series of eight new currency notes entering circulation this year. The latest notes issued Are the 5-Mark, 500 Mark and 1,000-Mark Bills. The 5-Mark Bill bears a portrait of poet Betti Navon Arnim on one Side and Berlin s Branden Burg Gate on the other. The 500-Mark Bill has artist and scientist Maria Sibylla Merian on one Side and a picture of a dandelion with a Caterpillar and a Butterfly on the reverse Side. Portraits of the Brothers Grimm Are on the front Side of the 1,000-Mark Bill. The advisory Council on dependents education began conducting two Day visits to 16 schools in the department of defense dependents schools Germany Region tuesday. Teams from the Council will visit four schools each in the Region s Frankfurt Heidelberg Niernberg and Rhein Eifel districts. Open meetings for parents and teachers Are set for today in one school from each District. The 24 members of the Council will gather Friday and saturday in Wiesbaden at the Oralien hotel for the group s semiannual meeting. The Council is made up of parents teachers Stu dents school administrators military members and representatives from the secretaries of defense and education.
