Three of the schools six first Grade classes about 60 pupils spent oct. 28 on a Field trip to the nearby Poz Yuoh fish Market and the Naples aquarium. At the Market they see fish from the Mediterranean that Are Good for food a said Rita Tomei the schools teacher in the Host nation program. A at the aquarium they see fish a whether they re Good to eat or hot a that live in the \ along with the italian names of sea creatures Tomei said she prepared the youngsters for the Days Outing during her classes by explaining facts about the Mediterranean such As that the sea surrounding Italy has no Szarics. During the trip however it was sights sounds and smells that impressed the children As they came face to snout with the sea animals they had studied. Merchants at the Pozzuoli Market delighted at waving a live squirming octopus at the youngsters or letting an eel slither toward them. The youngsters responded variously with shrieks of terror and giggles of Delight. An important test of How much italian the children had Learned in their Host nation class came when they were allowed to buy Niit at another area Market As dessert for their bag lunches. As the Only student member of the advisory Council on dependents education he represents the nearly 110,000 pupils in department of defense dependents schools worldwide. The councils student seat which is held by a High school senior is rotated throughout the school systems regions Ramsey from Roger b. Chaffee High school St. Georges Bermuda was selected from the Atlantic Region. His first experience on the Council came late last month when the 24-member group assembled in Wiesbaden to hold its semiannual meeting. Quot i was excited even though i did no to understand Ramsey what i was actually doing a said Ramsey 17, a missionary a son who has spent 11 years in Brazil and attended Public and private schools m the United states. A the More i started to try to find issues to bring up. The More i became aware of the responsibility that it Wasny to just a free trip to Germany a he said. A a you re really on your own the Council established by Congress in 1978, meets twice a year. It gives recommendations to the school systems director on general operation policies for the schools. Made up of parents teachers students school administrators military members and representatives from the offices of the secretaries of defense and education the Council mirrors an american school Board. A student concerns Are actually accepted a said Ramsey who holds two Star general status when on location with the Council. A you Arentt treated As a student but As a person with a mature opinion. Its incredible to me that students actually do have a voice Here. You can actually make a difference. That really impressed issues such As advanced placement courses no credited advanced courses for pupils below the High school level study Hall and the seven period Day which concern Ramsey and Many of his fellow students were on the Agenda and allowed Ramsey the Opportunity to be heard. Advanced placement courses Are popular with students in the Dodds system. Grades earned from honors or advanced placement courses Are credited on College transcripts. A a in be attempted to explain How important a courses Are and that they still should be offered even though there Are draw Downs and cutbacks Quot said Ramsey whose senior class numbers 12. A the theme for Dodds is High expectations the value of a courses is just incredible for Ramsey also raised the Issue of younger pupils who sometimes take advanced courses such As algebra and foreign languages but do not receive documented credit for the courses. For example a seventh or eighth grader who takes a course alongside a ninth grader in a school attended by All three grades wont get the same credit for the course As the ninth grader. A there is some discrepancy in that a Ramsey said. A a we a like to change a proposal to allow study Halls which was turned Down a few years ago was also on Ramsey a Agenda. Dodds policy prohibits study Halls but because More rigorous courses translate into More hours of Homework and extend Days that already Are Long students believe an adjustment should be made. It used to be that the senior year was a a party factory a Ramsey explained. Because of that he and Many of his fellow students decided to get advanced courses out of the Way Early on he said vowing not to a be a senior and taking but he said a it did no to work that now the trend is to get More involved academically in the senior year not Only in Dodds but across the United states. A i guess we re becoming More concerned with our future and College a said Ramsey who wants to attend Baylor University in Waco Texas. In the meantime a study Hall period would help those students who Are spending up to five hours a night doing Homework he said a a in be gotten letters from other kids who be addressed the same problem a he said. A High school is becoming too much work a you try to maintain the High expectations meet your goal and get prepared for College but at the same time you re wearing yourself out. So we Are asking re implementation of study Halls at the discretion of the Counselor Quot compared with other schools he has attended Ramsey finds Dodds educational programs facilities and equipment a incredible Quot Ramsey said the school systems biggest problem a is keeping students interested because of their transition and the social and emotional problems students have from so much moving. Education Wise and program Wise All we Are doing Here is improving on what is already a the attitude is what we need to work on a he said. A if you can get students excited about going to school and give them enough incentive to want to do that i think Dodds could be producing some of the leaders of our
