     European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 14, 1993, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Joie de Paris Uso in search of a new base Bernard Weinberg of the Uso has plenty of tips for americans visiting Paris. The Paris Uso is looking for a new Home. Pershing Hall the building in which the office has been located since 1976, is to be renovated and the Uso must move perhaps permanently. Several of the Hall s other tenants have already left. The office is just a few blocks from the champs�lys6es, and Uso officials would like to find something nearby. However Beverly Cerchio the office director said the area is one of the highest rent districts in Paris and one of the most sought after forcing the Uso to look elsewhere. Quot we Are being careful about where we select because we want the new office to still be accessible for visitors Quot she said. She said the staff expects to be moving in the Spring or Early summer. Pershing Hall recognizable from the Street by its Blue awning is at 49 Rue Pierre Charron. The Uso office is a Little difficult to find because it has no outside sign due to longtime Security precautions. Its Entrance is to the right of a Security guard stationed in the Hall lobby. Visitors must show an id card to enter. Inside the Uso s four person staff dispenses tourist tips finds hotel rooms Sells souvenirs and books spaces on bus Tours and at nightclubs for thousands of americans each year. _ the office i open 10 . A John Taylor the airy Interior of the Sainte Chapelle near notre Dame is smoking a. T. A a it is hard to believe but the cafes of Paris Are losing some of their holy smoke. For years poets painters and incurable romantics have glorified the City s cozy haunts where patrons could linger Over Coffee or Beer while conversing flirting or arguing in a Haze of cigarette smoke. A French Law that went into effect nov. 1 bans smoking in most Public places including restaurants bars and cafes except in designated areas. This is nothing new to americans who Are used to nonsmoking areas but it is to Many parisians. Still it appears that most restaurants Are following the Law by setting aside areas for nonsmokers. These sections Are not always Large in the prime seating areas or As readily visible As they Are in eateries in other parts of France but they do exist. Some cafes and bars Are putting up Token resistance by posting signs stating the establishment is reserved for smokers with nonsmokers tolerated. But for the most part the Fum eurs and the non Fum eurs Are getting along just Fine. It. Seems to be a Case of no smoke no ire a at least for now.
