European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - February 5, 1993, Darmstadt, Hesse Cash and Kristofferson Good time a. Country feelin7 i i by Ron Mckinney. Staff writer Johnny Cash and sidekick Kris Kristofferson jammed onstage at the Frankfurt fes Halle earlier this week but their powerful music did Little to stimulate the mostly German crowd of about 2,000. This was by no Means your Standard Good old american foot stomping Beer Drinkin country music crowd. These were upscale Middle aged germans in imitation Cowboy hats adorned with feathers and dozens of vol Smarch pins. There was no two stepping in these aisles. / when Kristofferson took the stage hardly anyone noticed. And it changed Little when Kristofferson offered his classic help me make it through the night. Backstage Kristofferson acknowledged that the crowd had been Flat saying that there had been no magic. He did say that he had played in Austria to a crowd of 5,000 people pumping their fists with the music. Kristofferson had trouble with feedback from his microphone but otherwise was Brilliant As he played the Harmonica an acoustic guitar and Sang from the Long list of hits he has written. He was accompanied Only by a keyboardist. After less than an hour later having played sunday morning coming Down Jody and the kid and me and Bobby Mcgee Kristofferson acquiesced to the crowd s wishes and gave up the stage for Cash. Unfortunately Kristofferson s magic is in the tales he spins in his songs the stories they Tell and that seemed lost on the Frankfurt crowd a promoters did Little to draw americans to the concert. Cash however has always been a fixture in the Cerman music culture. And the Man in Black received a relatively loud ovation from the staid audience when he walked onstage for the Start of an hour and 45 minutes of music featuring his wife june Carter his son John Carter Cash and the song Why me lord with Kristofferson. J a amps Michael Abrams Johnny Cash s simple presentation during his concerts keeps the focus on his songs. Cash with his deep resonant voice As Clear As Ever at 60 years old Sang Many of his hits including ring of fire get rhythm i got stripes guess things happen that Way Folsom prison blues san Quentin Don t take your guns to town and daddy Sang Bass. Cash was predictably solid using material from throughout his 30-year career. Even today he remains True to himself and his music wrapping his evocative sprigs in a simple if not Stark presentation. He also paid tribute to american service members to whom he dedicated his final song i walk the line. It was a curious dedication since there were so few americans were in the audience. The crowd finally showed some Energy when Cash said Good night. They stormed the stage As Cash Shook hands for a few minutes before blowing a few kisses and waving Goodby.
