Saving lives in Hie mid mess by Mike Recht associated press. Or. Frank Hubbell of Conway n.h., Learned about the Quot Golden hour Quot of Medicine ?0 years ago. It happened on one of his first Rescue missions in the White mountains when he helped treat a youngster for a broken . A he and other rescuers followed All the prescribed emergency treatment setting the fracture in the position it was found. The boy nevertheless lost his hand. Quot what we Learned was that when a fracture is Angul ated the Supply of blood can be shut off nerves can be crushed and if you Don t re establish circulation you can lose a limb. It will die Quot said Hubbell who was a paramedic at the time. The incident made i Hubbell realize his skills would t always work in the wilderness where the Quot Golden hour Quot to. Get a patient to a Hospital can turn into hours or Days. There s no 911 to Call in an emergency and Quot you can t carry an ambulance on the trip,&Quot.said Hubbell s wife Lee Frizzell. So in 1977, one year after their wedding Hubbell and Frizzell founded Solo or Stone Hearth open learning opportunities. They envisioned a Center with All kinds of adult learning but it has evolved into a school to teach wilderness Medicine. They put into practice much of what they had Learned through years of wilderness Rescue experience and they have often challenged theories of accepted treatment. Solo s five full time and 10 part time instructors have instructed doctors College students Forest rangers outdoor clubs or fathers who Lead boy scout trips a anyone who spends time in the wilderness. Quot in the past five years interest in wilderness Medicine has exploded Quot Frizzell said. Quot thousands of people Are treated throughout the country for wilderness injuries. More and More people Are going out when a hiker Falls Down a Crevice and Breaks a leg or a Winter hiker is disabled and suffers frostbite and hypothermia rescuers must know How to improvise splints or a Stretcher by using Sticks and Moss How to safely wrap a patient without complicating the injury and How to feed or give fluids for hours or Days until the injured person can be brought Back to civilization. Much of Solo s teaching is done on its own Campus in Conway where they have classrooms and a dormitory that sleeps about 40. About 3,000 people each year take various courses. Wilderness medical associates in Bryant Pond Maine and the wilderness medical Institute in Pitkin colo., an offshoot of Solo have no Campus but offer programs at various Sites. A 1ion uni staff shortage causes unpredictable hours q a my question concerns the Leek of consistent hours or facilities. I realize in in time of draw Down that Soma services must be eliminated and others win be substantially Cut Back. However for those services remaining a consistent set of hours should by established Many facilities have posted hours when they Are not available. The sign says they should be open but no ones there. Other services change their hours so frequently that it s nearly impossible for those of us with one car to hit a time when they Are open. This past month the service that we would have liked most to use but were unable to was the Driver s License facility at Mcculley Barracks in Mainz Germany. The availability of the test during the past month has been e week 1 monday and tuesday testing Days a my husband scheduled to take me the following week. E week 2 testing was cancelled at this location. A week 3 testing was again available on tuesday a my husband again cleared with his superiors to take me on the following tuesday. A week 4 test was available on monday a this precluded me from testing again because my husband had cleared for tuesday and had a physical training test on monday. Often these Days Are changed at the beginning of the week so there s no Way to reschedule. All we can do is try to arrange for the next week and Cross our fingers. Please explain Why a consistent time can t be set at this facility and Many others.
