I was determined they kind of watching Bussey and Barnthouse became preg Nant after the policy had changed. But Bussey a nurse agreed that there still were problems with attitudes and the sys tem itself. There was acceptance that the policy had changed but the tangible items were still being worked on said bus sey 43, from new Bern . There was no military maternity uniform and there was really no policy that gave command or medical treatment facilities any guid Ance on How to handle pregnant Active duty Bussey said that some Little things caused problems. For instance when Shehad to go to a military function she had to Wear civilian clothes because of the Lack of a military maternity uniform. And issues like How much convalescent leave time they were allowed four weeks should you get after having a baby had to be worked out she said. We had to go through several years to get those problems ironed she added that some people thought it was wonderful the women were pregnant but when Are you getting out she Felt that people still could t believe women could juggle a marriage raise children and have a military career. We did t have a lot of examples on How to work these problems out Bussey. Said. So Over the past 18 years we be been working a lot of these problems the women had to sign statements say ing that their pregnancy or subsequent children would not interfere with their military Job. Active duty women Are just As committed to their careers. As anybody else even if you have a family. One does not preclude that you can t do the other Navy it. Cmdr. Jane Bussey weren t going to make me Serna said that everyone was supposed to do these jobs before they went off duty. But she Felt she got More than her share despite out ranking some of the males. But she did them without argument and a smile on my face. It was pretty male hey did t really give us a hassle out being pregnant and on Active duty but it seemed to me like you had to prove that you still could take it said barn Thouse a Navy journalist. There were Das a Hen you really did t feel too Good but of did t ask for time off or go to s k Call because you knew they would be pc i our but it military families did not have to sign such documents Bussey and Barnthouse said. Military regulations have since changed so that both Active duty parents have to sign this statement. My husband and i worked different shifts when our son was Young said bar nuthouse 40, a native of Farragut Iowa. It made it Good for child care because at first we did t need a baby Sitter or search for child care. But it was t Good for our relationship because we hardly Ever saw each Bussey and Serna got support from their families. Bussey s Mother live nearby and often tended to the child. However there were other times when baby Sitters would quit and the couple had to scramble to find a replacement. Serna s sister came and lived with her for a while when she was stationed at or Lando Fla. A lot of people were very hesitant to baby sit any longer than necessary Serna said. So i had one of my Sisters stay with me and i helped her go through College at the same the women s children May not remember much about that time but As they pot older they tried to adapt to military life not always did t adapt when my Mother had to leave at times said min Eye Bussey 18, a High school senior. And to this Day still Naven t but she s enjoyed her life growing up in the military. It s been a plus Michele said. If you look at kids who have Only spent their life in one town they Are not used to being around a lot of different people. I feel i can Deal with people Token Barnthouse 18, echoed those sentiments. I be had Many opportunities that i would never have had if i was Back in a Small town in the Middle of the and while Michele has no plans to continue her ties with the military once her Mother retires Token would like to join the air Force. They women won t have to go through what we went Serna said the Battle for women s rights in the military today has moved into a new Arena with changes to women s role in combat. I knew it was coming Serna said. It was just like allowing women on ships. When i first entered women weren t Al Lowed on Barnthouse believes women will take Over in combat roles but she thinks not everyone is qualified. Not every woman is qualified for every Type of combat role she said. "i3uti Don t think every woman is qualified for the military. You be got to want to do this Type of she added that the same applies to men. It has to be something you want to do. But women should t be barred. Active duty women Are just As committed to their careers in the Navy As anybody else even if you have a family Bussey noted.
