European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - August 04, 1993, Darmstadt, Hesse The dog Day doldrums of summer Norm or fishing in. Midsummer is often slow at Best. But anyone who has Ever been out of commission for a couple of months knows that even poor fishing is better than no Are some places that Are More dependable than others during less than Ideal weather conditions. In Germany one of the safest bets is the Franzische Schweiz franconian Switzerland Region Southeast of Bamberg known for its Brown Trout and Grayling. Because the Rivers Are Spring fed they usually remain Cool in hot weather. They also can absorb a moderate rain without being spoiled. With these advantages in mind two friends master sgt. Vic Edwards from Wiesbaden Germany and Bob Tulk a retired service member from Frankfurt Germany and i recently took a two Day trip to the Wisent River. We arrived at the Wisent in Streinberg on a sweltering july afternoon with Only an occasional breath of air stirring the water. With the midday heat and the Sun High in the sky the sensible thing to do would have been to relax in the Shade with a Cool Beer and wait until evening to fish. But fishermen Are not always sensible. On the water the action proved to be As dead As the air. The Wisent is a Fly fishing River. But this Day there was hardly a Bug to be seen and Only an occasional foolish Little fish dimpled the surface. After pounding the water for nearly five hours it was time to take a break for dinner. When we compared our Luck Tully was High Man with three fish two on nymphs and one on a dry Fly. Edwards had caught one and i had none. The summer Day doldrums can give Way to fast action evenings. But this Day it was not to be. When we got Back on the water a storm swept in roaring up the Wisent Valley with lightning rain and squally winds. Fishing Between lightning bolts each of us managed to catch a fish with Edwards Landing the Best of the Day. We quit at dark with a steady rain falling and More Black Clouds rolling in. That night we stayed in the Pulve Muhle a Guesthouse about 10 Miles upriver in Wai Schenfeld. The Pulve Muhle Sells permits for a 1-i.iile stretch of the Wisent. We All had Hopes for a fresh Start and a new Day. But the rain was too much. At 6 the next morning the River was a turgid torrent the color of Coffee with Cream. It was a perfect Day for sightseeing and a leisurely drive Home. Permits for the Wisent near Streinberg Are available from the tackle shop Der Wiesen Fischer in Streinberg. Owner Maria Eckert advises anglers to Call ahead at 09196-263. The Pulve Muhle Sells permits to both guests and non guess. Call ahead at 09202-104-1. Short subject sub warfare systems May help save fish by Steven Prokesch the new York times experts on anti submarine warfare at a Small company in Waterford conn., have Long been obsessed with soviet submarines because they design the sonar systems that enable the Navy s submarine and surface ships to detect and track those in the last few years 25 engineers and computer programmers at the company a analysts inc., have been obsessed with much smaller inhabitants of the deep that May not pose a threat to National Security but Are a big concern to electric utilities the fishing Industry governments environmentalists and municipal water systems. Demonstrating that in one instance military knowledge can be converted into civilian applications a analysts has used its sonar expertise to develop a relatively inexpensive Way to scare away fish. It works by using what Are essentially underwater speakers to Emit one or several frequencies in a pattern of pulses at a certain volume. Different combinations of frequencies pulses and amplitudes might affect different fish species. The mechanism is similar to that used in an Active sonar system which works by bouncing sound Waves off objects. Both generate electrical signals that Are put through an amplifier and then converted into sound Energy by one or several transducers. Only prototypes of the system called fish startle have been tested. But they succeeded in scaring Clup eids widely found fish in the herring family that include alewives american Shad and Blueback herring. If such systems can be made As effective with other fish like Salmon White Perch and striped Bass As government and Industry biologists and a analysts Hope they can it could mean hundreds of millions and perhaps billions of dollars in savings for electric utilities that use water from Rivers lakes and the Ocean to Cool Power plants. Federal and state governments Are pressuring them to modify plants so fish Are no drawn in and killed. A system like fish startle could also solve the Long perplexing problem of getting fish that spawn in Freshwater but spend their adult lives in Saltwater including Salmon and some Clup eids to go through Safe passages in hydroelectric stations when they Migrate Down River so they avoid Power generating turbines that Chew them up. The Federal Energy regulatory commission is in the process of re licensing Many stations and is pushing utilities to improve fish Protection. Some 165 to 170 stations Are scheduled to be re licensed by the end of this year alone. Estimates of the Cost of improving fish Protection Range from tens of thousands to millions of dollars for each one. One of the leading researchers in the Field Edward p. Taft is a biologist and a manager for the Stone & Webster engineering corp s environmental technology and services division which tries to help utilities find ways to protect fish. He is sep tidal that any one behavioural system such As fish startle will be effective with a wide Range of fish. But Tan said he believed a combination of approaches might ultimately provide the answer. He said Stone & Webster has had great Success in full scale tests using Strobe lights to push american Shad away from Turbine water intakes and through a Safe passage in a hydroelectric station Orv the Susquehanna River South of Harrisburg a 20 wednesday August 4, 1993 the stars and stripes
