Hanau s Bender finally reached the top step after finishing fourth third and second the last three years when he posted his fourth straight score in the 70s Over the Par-72, 6,583-Yard Rhein Blick Golf course layout a 78 for a 311 total in the championship flight of 1993 army european championship Golf tournament. Baum older s Davis turned in his second straight 79 and won his third straight masters championship with a 72-Hole 317 total in the Over-40 championship flight. Bender Davis and Berlin s John Morris who had a 79 to win first flight accolades in the masters bracket were the Only golfers in their respective flights to shoot in the 70s Friday As the winds whipped up and most of the competitors could t successfully Cope with them. Friedberg s Chuck Ballard and Mark Maher both shot 80 and finished five and six strokes behind Bender respectively. Kitzinger s Dennis Sullivan was fourth at 320, a stroke ahead of Heidelberg s Charles Cochran. I finally reached the top of the ladder Bender beamed following his Victory. I figured if i could stay. Worms Marjean Lowas saved the Best for last shooting an 88 in the last round to beat out Bamberg Debra i Roth by two strokes with a 384. The 72 capped Mon Toya s steady improvement from an opening round 78 As he finished 76-73-72 for his 299. Claiming Safe spots in the men s masters Divi Sion for golfers 40 and older were Champion Fred Lindstrom of Ramstein who shot 75 for a 294, George Bowler of Rhein main 76-302 and Frank Grant of Ramstein 74-303. The Csc women will be represented at Safe by Sherry Dodds of chives Belgium who repeated thursday s 93 on Friday for a 364 total that was 15strokles better than runner up Cynthia Wesley of bad Aibhne. The third women s Slot goes to Ramstein Sterr Inetter. The recent rash of present and potential deploy ments puts unusual emphasis on the selection of the alternates for the Safe meet and that seemed to be reflected in the Competition for these slots. In the men s open it took two sudden death extra holes for John Thompson to Edge Clark Alexander for first alternate. Both golfers finished the tournament on their Home course tied at 301. Not to be outdone the masters also went to sudden death with Dave Puckett nosing out Tom Baptiste on the first extra Hole. Both Ramst Cincys finished Regula Tion tied at 328. Mildenhall s Fred Hare who shed the hounds Early in this event with an opening round 72,shot 75 Friday to take the Mas ters title for golfers 40 and older with a 295. Second was Dennis Woehrle of upper Heyford 77 314 third was fellow sky King Richard Marshall 83-325. All three Are ticketed for Safe. Susan Cunningham is the a women s Champion. Her final Reading of 83-85-93-87348 beat upper Heyford s Debbie Sprich by seven strokes. Prich closed with her Best round of the tourney 86.the third us women s entrant in Safe depends on commander s approval. B los Angeles a Marianne Stanley turned around the women s basketball program at Southern califor Nia. Now she wants to be paid As much As men s coach George Raveling. Stanley sued the University and athletic director Mike Garrett for $8 million thursday alleging sex discrimination and retaliation wrongful discharge breach of implied contract and conspiracy. Stanley alleges Garrett promised her a multiyear contract if she coached the team into the Mcaa tournament but offered her Only a 1-year Deal in March after she sought the same salary themen s coaches receive. She also alleges the University with held her paycheck because she refuse to sign the 1-year Deal. The Only thing she s asking is to be paid equal to the men said Robertell one of her attorneys. Stanley s contract expired june 30. She rejected a renewal that would have paid her an amount nearly equivalent to what Raveling earned after four years Accord ing to an athletic department source who spoke on condition of anonymity. Instead Stanley sought an amount equal to Raveling s current contract the source said. Raveling will begin his eighth season in november. She took the Job in August 1989 at a salary of $60,000, according to the suit filed in los Angeles Superior court. The trojans had a 12-16 record the season before Stanley arrived. After she took Over the team Stum bled to an 8-19 Mark in her first year. However the trojans showed significant improvement the next three years going 18-12 in 1991, 23-8 in 1992 and 22-7 last season. The trojans played in the Mcaa tournament following each of the last three seasons but never made it beyond the regional. They twice finished second in the Pacific-10 conference
