The justices reversed lower court Rul Ings that had thrown out the lawsuit be cause the woman had failed to prove that her Boss s conduct had caused her severe psychological injury writing for the court Justice Sandra Day o Connor said Federal Law does bar conduct that would seriously affect a reasonable person s psychological Well  but she added that the Law is not limited to such  so Long As the environment would reasonably be perceived and is perceived As hostile or abusive there is no need for it also to be psychologically injurious o Connor said. The High court ruled in 1986 that on the Job sexual harassment is illegal if it is sufficiently severe or pervasive to alter the conditions of the victim s employ  in tuesday s decision o Connor wrote for the court that the 1986 ruling did not create a mathematically precise  whether an environment is hostile or abusive can be determined Only by looking at All the circumstances she said. Without uniform death investigations the Academy said Progress in understand ing sudden infant death syndrome is inhibited cases of child abuse and neglect Are missed and genetic diseases go in  few exceptions throughout the United states there is no uniform system for the investigation of infant and child deaths the Academy said in a policy statement released monday. The statement appears in the novem Ber Issue of paediatrics the journal of the46,000-member Academy based in suburban Elk Grove Village. Of the 55,861 deaths of children younger than 15 in the United states in 1989, More than three fourths occurred in children younger than 2, the Academy said. About one third of these earlier deaths were unexpected or unexplained it said.
