European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - November 19, 1993, Darmstadt, Hesse F o c u s Freddie fender above takes the stage with Texas Tornado front Row from left Auric Meyers and Flaco Jimenez plus two supporting musicians. Texas Tornado blow away Jam fans by Steve scholar Kaiserslautern Bureau it was Texas. Almost. A Large Texas Flag hanging behind the stage set the mood for the night. The plywood floors could have come straight from the Ponderosa club in Abilene. Enough Miller Lite was flowing to drown a steer and if you weren t wearing tight fitting Rocky Mountain jeans and a Cowboy hat you weren to. Well you get the Point. More than 1,000 real and Wannabe Urban cowpokes saddled up for country Jam 93 at the Kaiserslautern special events Center Germany last week to hear the likes of country music bands Shylo and Texas Pride and the Tex mex music specialists Texas Tornado featuring Freddie fender. The Tornado have a special kind of musical blend that fender said comes almost effortlessly. A we Don t practice much a he said in an interview before the concert. A we just go into the studio and kind of let it happen. Our music just comes fender said he likes playing with the band which also includes accordionist Flaco Jimenez and Rock n Roll veterans Augie Meyers and Doug Sahm and three supporting musicians because a i get to do what i want. I just fell right into that approach must work. The band which formed in March 1990, produced a grammy Winner with its second album zone of their own. The Kaiserslautern concert was part of its Hangin on a thread tour which includes stops in Switzerland and throughout Scandinavia. Jimenez a two time grammy Winner who has played a with Dwightt Yoakum and a Host of other country stars said the crowds seem to like the Tornado Brand of music. Quot maybe it s because of the mix of hispanic and English. No matter what language the message of the music gets through a he said. T Shylo opened for the Tornado and did its Best to Calm a Good natured Rowdy crowd that was ready for fender. And a Medley of his old hits. Shylo s sound system left a Little to be desired and its rendition of Garth Brooks shameless might Well have been called shameful. But the band had the crowd jumping in its seats and the wooden dance floor was filled to overflowing. It was t Long though before the crowd started to. Grow restless. The fans wanted the Tornado. And when the Tex mex boys took the stage they did t disappoint. The band played for almost two hours and most of the time the crowd stood at the foot of the stage swaying Back and Forth and shouting encouragement. Fender proved that the Sweet High voice that made him famous singing ballads and love songs Over the past 20 years is still Able to croon. He moved effortlessly through a number of his most popular song including before the next Teardrop Falls and wasted Days and wasted nights. Fender who said during the interview that he has t had a drink in More than eight years shows that the voice can get better As the Singer gets older. Meyers Sang Many of the Voca s and moved into the Rock n Roll Arena several times with no difficulty. The Rock songs featured a thunderous beat that sent the music rising in great crescendos that approached ear splitting pandemonium. The band had a terrific sound system although the finer Points of the music and a Cicala would have been better appreciated if the volume had been turned Down a Shade. Accompanied by a stage Light show and a machine that filled the rafters with smoke the elements All combined to make a great show. When the Tornado left the stage about 11 p.m., Texas Pride took its turn entertaining the crowd until about 1 30 . The 415th base support in people and a Large group of volunteers did a Nice Job in setting up the Large tent that has become the special events Center. The tent can hold up to 2,000 people for indoor events a future expansion is supposed to increase its indoor capacity to almost 3,000. ,. The inside featured a bar where wine coolers Beer Sott drinks and food could be had at reasonable prices. Chris Wiltman los Angeles times Black Butterfly Russell Malone Columbia or years now the phrase Quot Young jazz guitarist Quot has conjured images of Fleet fingered fusion players whose blistering leads dazzled Rock schooled listeners but left old style jazz fans cold. But Russell Malone May yet put that cliche to rest. Even though he a Youthful enough to have grown up on John Mclaughlin and a Dimeola the Way he plays is enough to make you think the Mah Vishnu orchestra never happened. Malone a sound on Black Butterfly is round and warm and his phrasing recalls the Rich blues tinged work of Wes Montgomery or Grant Green though As the Breakneck Bop tune jingles makes Plain he also has the Speed and dexterity of Joe pass. So even when he turns to a contemporary pop tune like i say a utile prayer for you the music he makes is solidly traditional and utterly delightful. A .
