The conference designed to give Young people an in depth look at journalism and some hands on training has been held for the past six years at the Niernberg youth Hostel next door to the City a Castle and overlooking the world famous Christmas Market. Journalists including the senior editor of Usa today journalism professors and an editorial cartoonist led sessions in feature writing and sport writing press Law and careers in journalism. The Mannheim High students Are Lucky because their principals and sponsor Are Quot very open to our ideas a she said. Quot they listen to us tet us write what we want to write about and what interests the students. Its neat knowing about other school problem Sand How they solve them in Case we run across the same  students complained about problems with censorship from administrators parents and Community leaders. They said that in some cases the censorship stems from disagreement Over who should control the Content a students or administrators. In other cases its a matter of self censorship. At Lan Stuhl for example pupils take extra precautions because the audience ranges from kindergarten through eighth Grade. A we can to put a lot of articles that the High schooners Are putting in Quot said Maes noting that an article on abortion did not run Quot because we had to consider that there were Kinder partners and other lower grades. Heidi Juersivich a Junior at Ramstein High school used her life experiences in Europe to write a commentary on Why she prefers the benefits of living in Europe to those of the United Stales. Field Mannheim High school took top honors i told my parents that there was no Way 1 last week As commentary writers during would win but 1 would enter because i the 11th annual Dodds Germany journalism conference. Juersivich and Graser were selected for travel scholarships to the United states to attend the journalism education association convention in Portland ore., in april. Scott Ralph from Ramstein is the alternate. Trips Are sponsored by United airlines. Teacher advisers attending the conference selected the winners from 35 entrants. Quot its a wonderful Opportunity for our trips Over Here take pupils to All kinds of kids to meet with other student journalists i i in the Stulen a said Sli Rihn if a Ninfi a exotic places she explained. I also talked about How its safer in Europe and its easier to learn a language and since you live in that country you use  Juersivich and Marc Graser a senior at in the states Quot said Stephanie Donofe a teacher from Pitburg and tie conference organizer. This is the second year the scholarships have been offered. Last year s winners attended the National journalism conference in Washington. Quot i was really shocked Quot at winning said Juersivich who aspires to be a children a Book author and Illustrator. Quot before i left thought i should. So when i won 1 was really  Graser 17, who Hopes to study journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston Iii won with a commentary opposite of Juersivich a. He cited better educational and Job opportunities As reasons to go Back to the United states. The student commentaries Are to be published in newspapers across the United states. Graser a goal is International reporting. Quot i w ant to be sent to places like Yugoslavia Somalia or Russia or wherever there is something going on in the world a he said. Mannheim High schools principal Barbara Axton thinks Graser will reach his goal. Quot we re proud of him Quot she said Friday. Quot we done to want to take All the credit for we know he had other experiences before he came Here but we certainly have capitalized on his strengths.
