Their Muddy Camp consists of a half dozen dilapidated wooden Barracks buildings plus a ramshackle school House. At one time the Camp housed workers constructing the nearby Pucka Highway Tunnel. Within the Barracks entire families dwell in Small single rooms where they Cook eat and sleep. Each room has a Wood burning stove for cooking and heating. The refugees forage the surrounding forests for firewood. Each Barrack building has but a single Quot bomb sight Quot toilet and a solitary Shower cold water Only to serve 50 people. The Camp is populated by Many women and Young most of the husbands and older children Are fighting on the front lines. There has been no news about some of them for seven or eight months. Their relatives Don t know whether they Are dead or alive Quot Berg told a visitor to the Camp. The few men living in the Camp Are either elderly or Are repatriated prisoners. One of them has Ancevic Jasmin told a visitor that he was constantly beaten during the nine months he spent As a pow in six serbian concentration Camps. Other refugee men told similar tales of beatings and near starvation conditions in the serbian Camps the bosnian because they Are political refugees Are eligible to emigrate to a number of welcoming countries. Most of the Camp s inhabitants Hope to go to Germany because they have relatives living there. Quot my family is taking health exams now and we Hope to leave for Germany in a few months Quot Jasmin said. Living conditions for the croatians in the now ironically named hotel splendid in the nearby Seaside town of Lovran Are better than in the Camp but Are still depressing. The croatians lost their Homes and belongings when they fled their Homes in Vukovan one of the first cities to fall to the serbs when Serbia and Croatia began warring. Out of the 181 croatians All catholics in the hotel 91 of them Are children. There Are few men living in the hotel. Many of the children s fathers and Brothers Are off fighting or have been killed in action. While another Relief Convoy is expected to make the trip to Croatia in february the Relief Effort is in urgent need of funds to Purchase Medicine for ailing refugees and to transport supplies to them.
