European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 08, 1994, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday january 1994 commentary the stars and stripes Page 13 Clinton support of funded Cal Thomas when the chinese government announced last month that it would begin doing publicly what Many suspected it had been doing privately for some time forcing women who violated the government s population control policy to have abortions most americans re acted with disgust and alarm. Even pro Choice group condemned the decision by Bei Jing s communist regime. Now the Clin ton administration is forcing states to use medicaid funds to pay for abortions for poor women who become pregnant from rape or incest or in cases in which a pregnancy threatens the woman Slife. While there Are differences in de Gree Between the policies of China an the Clinton administration morally they Are the same. The Power and purse of government will conduct policies that Are anathema to significant numbers of people. About half the states have prohibitions against taxpayer funded abortions. In some there Are constitutional restrictions. But the Clinton administration seeks to ride roughshod Over the will of the people and impose a policy made in Liberal hell. What happened to the president who said during the Campaign that rethought top Many abortions were being performed and he promised to do what he could do reduce their number from his first full Day in the White House he has done just the opposite removing what few restrictions remain on now he will Force even pro life americans to subsidize what they regards the greatest moral evil of our time. Thirty years ago abortion advocate began opening the door on liberalized abortion Laws by arguing the procedure was needed in order to help women who became pregnant As a result of rape or incest. Once that Small category was established As an exception it quickly evolved into abortion for any reason. The Linton administration is following a Sim Ilar strategy in forcing taxpayers to Payfor abortions Only in cases of rape incest or danger to the life of the Mother increasingly rare. If that policy survives court challenges by pro life groups it will be a Short step toward full funding for All abortions for poor women whatever the reason. Politically it May be difficult to favor Protection for unborn babies conceived As a re sult of rape or incest until you meet people who Are products of such violent acts. V ,. One such is Julie Makimaa whose Mother was raped but decided to keep the baby. Four years ago Makimaa now married with children of her own founded a group called fortress International. Its 500 members Are women who became pregnant after being raped or from incest. Four Hundred of them decided to give birth. Over and Over i have found women who had abortions and Many years later recovered from the rape or incest but have not recovered from the abortion Makimaa tells me. They see themselves not Only As a victim of assault but a Vic Makimaa notes that while rape i usually a single act and that it can be used As an excuse for abortion when no rape occurred incest is often carried out Over a number of years. Most Youmg girls Are forced into Abor Tion by the person who is trying to hide his role As a victimized " she says their no. 1 problem and that of therapy victim too is not the pregnancy itself but dealing with people around them Many of whom coerce them into having abortions against their Makimaa frequently lectures on abortion. One of her Best lines to audiences is ill bet most of you Don t know the circumstances of your Concep Tion. I la bet most of your parents did sit Down one night and discuss the pros and cons of having you and then make a intellectual decision in your in fact most of us were accidents or unplanned. But whether we were wanted or not we were still valuable. Ask the 1.6 million childless couples who yearn to adopt each year but who Are largely frustrated because an equal number of abortions is performed. They la Tell you those 14,"q a. Lit a babies Are very much wanted by them regardless of race and often regardless of physical condition. Makimaa makes an other Point that is lost in our clamor for rights and instant solutions to every Burden. After speaking to hundreds of women who were victims of rape or incest she tells me for women carrying to term whether they place their babies for adoption or decide to keep them knowing what they know now they say they would choose to go through the air Sault again to have their Why docs such dramatic testimony remain largely unheard because so often it is suppressed by the abortion advocates who see the procedure As the Liberator of women in Stead of the enslaved it has too often be come. It is an unspeakable outrage for the Clinton administration to Force tax payers to underwrite abortions. C los Angeles times Constitution also protects right to deny truth one up for Georgetown University the Back ground 1. One Bradley Smith a californian who should find better things to do runs something called the commit tee for open debate on the holocaust. The thesis of that open debate is that the holocaust probably never really happened and if it did it was of trivial significance and the . Holocaust memorial museum in Washington , is a Fine example of manipulative special interest politics. 2. Student editors Here and there Are sent full Page paid ads expressing this position on the holocaust and Many of them have proceeded to publish these ads. Their Point of View quite simply stated is that the first amendment guarantees the Freedom of speech and under the circumstances in accepting such ads they Are merely doing their duty by the first amendment 3. In publishing the holocaust never existed ads the students Are perfectly reflecting the epistemological pessimism of academic Freedom. Forty years ago a figure of speech was con stantly used in undergraduate education. It was to the effect that All ideas must Start out even in the by such ordinances you Aren t permitted As a teacher to postulate that say the declaration of Independence pronounces higher ideals than the communist William f. Buckley manifesto. No because by doing so you Are suggesting that the curtain on communism has curtains never close in an Arena of free inquiry. That i what academic Freedom taken to the lengths it is taken to inc enters of nihilist thinking is actually telling Stuart Mill the great Muse of the open mind taught us Over a Century ago that along As a single person believes something to be so it is not Cor rect for society to consider the question As closed. Academic Freedom patterned on such thought moved quite logically toward the deconstructionist position that nothing is Ever proved or provable.4. The effect of such nihilism is properly shocking to jewish , some time after the emperor Constantine was baptized the historians of the period began to writ that there had been no sacrifices of christians during the preceding 400 years one can imagine what Wouldhave been the rage of christians who had survived martyrdom. What is the motive of the californian determined to throw spitball at dead souls a committee based i Atlanta the Center for democratic renewal issues a report to the effect that such is the work of anti semitic that in t necessarily the Case the historical revisionist is not necessarily pro communist any More than Charles Beard was pro Kaiser or Charles Tansill was pro Tojo. But the important thing to remember about the first amendment is that just As it guarantees us the Freedom to pursue the truth it guarantees others the right to deny the truth. There is no Diapositive event in Prospect which allows the doubting Thomas physically to probe a wound to verify its authenticity. 5. So How did Georgetown handle the situation when the students there published the holocaust and the Media Board ruled that a Public apology was in order and that the $200 paid for the and should be sent to the holocaust museum. The three top editors of the paper were Given a guided tour of the museum escorted by a professor of theology. That last was not entirely appropriate since the holocaust was not a theological event out rather a historical event. And if we took every pro Fessor who disputes established historical events to museum we would need to ration the tickets. C Unive Sal press Syndicate
