No horrors Here i was disturbed by the news item concerning the treatment of an american in a German Hospital. I am an sex service member living in Germany and am at this moment in a German Hospital in Wiesbaden. S several times Over the past three years have been confined to German Hospi tals once for an operation. V to me your article health care horrors Jan. 10 appeared biased and did a great disservice to the German Hospital Sand their staffs who Are from All i have seen quite Friendly and professional. Even though i Don t speak much Ger Man and am clearly an american i have at All times been treated with dignity an the utmost care. The women quoted in your article Are most certainly exceptions to the Rule. I have never seen or heard of any such re Marks or actions in All the Days i have spent in German try to inform and enlighten your readers that should they at some time require attention or be admitted to Agerman Hospital they can expect courteous and professional treatment an most of them speak English for your convenience. Perry l. Mcdowell Wiesbaden Germany dental care diminishes this is our third overseas tour and with each one passing we Are seeing Les Sand less of medical benefits for dependents especially in the dental consider ourselves very Lucky to just get a regular appointment. Heaven forbid if you have special needs like crowns or braces. My daughter has Bee told that she needs braces however there Are other children who need them ahead of her. I can understand someone going ahead because his or her Teeth Are worse. What i Don t understand is that the civilian health and medical program of the uniformed services won t help cover the Bil Jfe to get it done on the econ omy. / if we were stateside champs would cover 50 percent of the Bill. How Ever because we Are serving our country in a foreign country we receive less benefits because we Are not serving our tour in the . Why nobody seems to be Able to answer that. Mary Furguson Heidelberg Germany your Legal rights articles devoted to the discussion of military Justice issues and the results of trials regularly appear in the stars and stripes. Previous articles have discussed the role of military judges and representation by civilian defense attorneys. I believe your articles help educate the Community about the military Justice sys tem and How that system functions which is an important service. However As an attorney and member of the trial de sense service i believe the role and function of the military defense counsel with in the military Justice system has not been adequately reported by the stars an stripes. Any member of the military May some Day be in a position where he or she needs Legal advice or requires Legal representation. The trial defense service is available to assist those military Mem should realize that the Tria defense service is Independent of local authority. The Chain of command for members of the trial defense service goes directly to Falls Church a. Mili tary defense counsels have Independence from the local Community allowing us to advocate and protect the rights of our clients without fear of Adverse local re action. The perception that military de sense lawyers must take orders from local commanders is inaccurate. It should be pointed out that the Tria defense service is generally not a first assignment for military attorneys. Mos military defense counsels have at least one prior tour of duty before becoming a defense counsel. Many military attorneys have civilian experience and other court room experience in addition to their Mili tary experience. The perception that Legal experience is Only possessed by civilian defense counsel and is not available within the military is inaccurate. Furthermore civil Ian experienced representation do snot automatically mean Superior Quality representation. The Bottom line is that the client must be comfortable with his or her defense lawyer whether that lawyer be a civilian or a military counsel. Military members should be aware of their Legal rights and should realize tha Legal advice is available to them from the trial defense service. Capt. Brian w. Commentary thank goodness Inman struck himself out by the Washington Post everybody knows that there is a lot of Public and journalistic pressure brought to Bear on people who choose to go into Public life these Days. More questions Are asked More secrets unearthed. Nobody we venture to guess inquire whether Melvin Laird had paid his Domestic help s social Security tax. Though the higher standards that prospective nominees must meet and the More com plete investigations they must face Are in general justified it is also True that in some instances the Field of inquiry into their qualifications and credentials has been expanded to the Point of assault on both the privacy and the dignity of the nominee. Everyone knows that too. We do not think the latter is what happened to adm. Bobby Inman however despite Inman s own furious account ing tuesday of the criticisms and affronts that prompted him to withdraw his names nominee for Secretary of defense. We think the Brief episode of his nomination from Start to close has revealed that he is not the right Man for this rough Rand Tum ble Job Inman s Case has been Well distinctive from the Day he stepped Forward in the Rose Garden to accept president Clin ton s nomination As Secretary of defense. Inman s very introduction of and his dwelling upon the subject of his own Comfort level in fact suggested the presence of the opposite a residual level of discomfort with joining up. He spoke not As nominees usually do of his pleasure at being selected his de termination to do the Job his Hope to justify the Confidence of the Man appointing him and so on but rather seemed preoccupied with the intricacies of his own feelings and attitudes about accepting the offer at All. Thus focused on his own Good Willin taking the Job he was naturally astonished and stung when the criticism began. His remarks tuesday seemed to suggest that he considered this illegitimate. Some of the columnists he cited did write very critically about him. But he did not answer the criticism until tuesday when he suggested variously that it was Mccarthy Ite super powerful unfair an dishonest in intent. He even spoke of some sort of sinister pact Between Senate minority Leader Robert Dole of Kansas and the new York times columnist Wil Liam Safire to get him. We expect that Safire to whose attack Sinman gave Central place in his account of his decision to withdraw will have plenty to say in response to Inman counterattack. Likewise Ellen Goodman and Anthony Lewis will respond ably for themselves. We Don t consider any of these columnists one of whom we publish and two others who appear in the new Yor times guilty of transgressing the proper Bounds of column writing. We do kno Winman is dead wrong to suggest that somehow the Power of columnists is such that All must be frightened of responding to their barbs. From where we sit watching Over letters and columns of both reply and counterattack not to mention news accounts it does t seem to us that columnists enjoy this strange immunity atall. We said when he was nominated that Inman had been a valuable Public servant and an extremely intelligent one and had done some excellent things in his the Brief Saga of his nomination to defense starting with that Comfort level speech has been different. We re glad it s Over. $ listener. A us due i is of the air with exactly say i. . I be lostwconc&4 a
