European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 21, 1994, Darmstadt, Hesse Animal instincts Burden delivers goods with Rute by Steve scholar staff writer Browing musical caution to the wind someone left the Cage door open monday night at Frankfurt s music Hall. And out crawled a hedonistic surly vulgar defiant prancing and Raspy voiced animal Eric Burdon. Burdon kept the Smoky Hall rocking Welt into tuesday morning. Backed by the Brian Auger band Burdon dug deep into the Well of his past hits and delivered them with a splash much to the Delight of those who packed the Hall songs like Monterey san franciscan nights sky Pilot and spill the wine were what the people wanted to hear and Burdon did t disappoint. I would t know what to do without music. It s important. Everyone loves the old songs Burdon said during an interview before the show in the somewhat Sleazy backstage area. Although music is Burdon s life his thoughts monday night were in Southern California which had just suffered a major earthquake. Burdon lives in the los Angeles area and was concerned about his House. I called Home to make sure the earthquake had t destroyed my Home. I was Lucky there s no damage Burdon said. Burdon and his original group the animals were in the first wave of the British invasion in the Early 1960s. Burdon said his friends included the beatles and the rolling stones but his most vivid memory was seeing two other musical favourites perform. It was 1964 and i saw James Brown and Otis Redding perform at the Apollo. They blew me away Burdon said. British Singer Eric Burdon at Center still lets his animal instincts guide his performance in a Frankfurt show with the Brian Auger band. At far left keyboard player Brian Auger keeps Pace with an unidentified musician at far right. Burden s voracious appetite in the 1960s and 70s for women and alcohol gave him a bad boy image that he still reinforces in his show. At one Point during the show he kicked Over the microphone playfully gave the audience the International peace sign and described a mexican Field of marijuana. In Between he let Loose with a few vulgarities that brought cheers from the audience. Burden s voice still maintains much of the Brash Quality it possessed in the 1960s. However the 52-year-old Singer occasionally found it difficult to hit the High notes and More than once forgot some of the lyrics. Despite the Small difficulties Burdon is still the consummate showman and danced across the stage for most of the evening. He jumped and twisted and played the Tambourine through Many of his songs and showed an Energy Many 52-year-Olds would envy. He seemed to pour his heart into each song and an appreciative audience s continual clapping almost brought the House Down. After several encores Burdon closed the show with his megabit the House of the rising Sun. As the first familiar chord of the song rocketed through the music Hall the crowd let put a Roar that was probably heard by the tailor Down in new Burdon s rudely emotive vocals gave House and his other songs a fresh dose of breath while managing to keep the musical purists Content. While Burdon breathed new life into the songs the Auger band furnished the heartbeat. Keyboardist Brian Auger played with a Fervour and abandon that surprised Many of those in the audience. He pummelled and attacked the Organ with a alacrity that shocked those nearest the stage and also covered them with Auger s sweat. The show allowed Auger and his band the Opportunity to showcase their talents which were considerable. Irishman blues Rock guitarist Samuel Eddy opened for Burdon and Auger and will one Day become a top billed act. His blues music was honest and Gutsy. When Eddy took his guitar and walked through the massive surging crowd Well. That was also Gutsy. Many people spent the night rocking and dancing in the tightly packed audience while others stood quietly lost in their thoughts. Whether noisy or quiet everyone seemed to have a great time.
