Thanks from a Berliner the fact that american forces Are Leav ing Berlin after 49 years this septembers a strange feeling for somebody who lived As a child for a Long time just oppo site Andrews Barracks. My parents and i i was 11 then came to Berlin during the Berlin Block Ade. We were forced to leave the russian zone because my father was Selling West Ern newspapers and magazines that the communists did t Lite i still remember the Day after our Arri Val when i discovered the army Barrack Sand i heard my father say As Long As they Are there we Are safe.". This Safe feeling was there during the blockade the East German uprising in june 1953i during the so called Khrushchev ultimatum the Cuba incident and the building of the Berlin Wall. We Felt the tension sometimes when we saw the american forces on Alert and still today know that without Allied presence Ber Lin would have been lost. I my Parent Sand All the other berliners would have to Jive another life maybe under dictatorship maybe far away from Home. Maybe they would be dead. You May understand that this lifetime experience left a deep impression and that it is still a strange feeling to imagine Andrews Barracks empty after septem Ber. Many soldiers who protected us Dur ing those years Are Back in Texas Ala Bama Wisconsin or somewhere else for along time now and Are fathers or grandfathers in the meantime. I would like to thank them All for the Job they have done. I think it does t happen often that an army saves a Whol City of two million p eople for almost half a Century. Wol Thieme Berlin uniformity in uniform in response to hunger for ration feb. 3i must agree about separate rations but i wonder if the writer know that if you cannot get to the dining facility during the Mealtimes because of duty related activities you can file for missed meal and be reimbursed for that a former no i always Felt that my duties were far More important than eat ing or worrying about when i would be Able to eat is True that the commander usually encourages soldiers to get off base an participate in the local communities. It is also True that we Are where american save for years to be Able to afford 30-Day vacations and we Are being paid to be Here. I think it is Worth not going to a dining facility a few times a week and no being reimbursed. As far As Boss better opportunities for single soldiers is concerned it is there to represent the single soldiers butt lacks uniformity and substance to be of any i pcs d from Berlin to fort Irwin Califi was educated very quickly about the differences Between usar eur and the conus Learned that defense administration guidance is All that Boss has. In 1993, i refused to implement regulations so that single soldiers would have uniform treat ment worldwide. Instead the army has made the lowest level commander the policy maker for single soldiers Quality. Of life and treatment. This Means that company commanders decide on single Soldier issues. Thanks to Gen. Crosbie and command set. Maj. George l. Horvath i single soldiers morale an Equality became an important Issue to them and they put out and ensured that policies were followed. They also made sure these policies were fair and uniformly enforced within Usa eur. In the conus army you will give up the Quality of life that you now enjoy and will most probably go Back to the Days when single soldiers were a great after duty hours took 12 years of Loyal service and left the . Army because i refuse to sup port an army that does not care about you at this place but will support you at that place. There Are regulations that Are valid worldwide for married soldiers and their dependents. Why can t single sol Diers have a regulation that will ensure uniform treatment and Quality of life worldwide David Berlin reality of teen sex i missed the comments in a recent article about sex education but i did read the two letters in response. I agree that the condom is not perfect nor is tithe sole answer to our problems of sexually transmitted diseases std an unplanned pregnancies. However to stand on a Pedestal removed from the reality of our society in the 1990s and tout abstinence and education As the cure to these problems is ignorant. As a professional who regularly work with teens i can Tell you that the reality of the situation is that these kids Are hav ing unprotected be with multiple part ners. They Are getting pregnant and infected with std despite health classes warning about All the need to be realistic and protect these children who Are sexually Active from unplanned pregnancies and potentially lethal std. At the same time Pecan work toward trying to change societal norms which through Media and advertisements promote irresponsible sexual behaviour. Gregory p. Welch Vii Irmburg Germany -.-. ,. " finding Quality time in response to tired of complaints Jan. 11since we have been Here i have had a lot of complaints but that is just my nature As a wife of a Cook and noncommissioned husband is More exhausted than i have Ever seen him but our marriage is bet Ter today than it was two years ago. My Hus band works Long hard hours in a thankless Job works 12 Days on and two off and on a different schedule almost every Day so behave had to seriously adjust our schedules As Well As our we came Here he worked from 6 . Until 2 p.m., monday through weekends no Field duty. It has been a big adjustment but i also know he can help it and can t fix it so i try my Best to go with the flow. It makes it easier for me to keep things going when i have a husband who does t complain about those under any thing else to do with work for the most part when he comes Home. As a general Rule the Job is left at the Job when he gets Home. He knows the Guys and women who he works with have it just As bad and sometime worse. It does t do any Good to carry a bad attitude. I work at the commissary with at Leas three women whose husbands Are military policemen another unenviable Job. They too have Learned to adjust to the hours of a Cook and an my. When he comes Home my husband does his Best to spend Quality time with me when he s not sleeping even if it isto give me a Little hand around the House or Elay a game of cards anything to show me attle attention and let me know he still cares. I guess with the previous Job i kind of took All that for granted because i sure appreciate it now. I have also Learned to do Smuch for myself As possible to keep Busy. I work i go to the Library and i teach a Craft class. Mrs. Charles o. Benson Karlsruhe Germany enjoy your stay a letter writer recently suggested that i contrast with the views of Gen. George a. Joulwan she feels that these Are not exciting times to be living in Europe that life is difficult and that a reality Check is needed. The reality is. That americans assigned to Europe Are not the Only service personnel experiencing More and More fre quent deployments. Nor Are we the Only ones hit of the draw Down. People living in forts drum Campbell Stewart and Bragg for instance know All about deployments. And anyone assigned in the not too Distant past to places such Assort Ord can talk to you about base clo sure. To me the reality is that our leaders Are doing All in their Power to ensure that life remains As stable As possible. I suspect that those people remaining in wild Flecken Are not having the Best of times with closure slated for this Spring sum Mer but i also suspect that they Are comforted knowing that their Community i doing everything possible to meet their needs and to keep them informed. As a family member who has lived at variety of army posts both Here and stateside i can honestly say that each Post has had More than adequate family support services. If the writer feels that it is her individual family support group that in t adequate i encourage her to pitch in. When each of us As individual becomes responsible citizens of our Fig and Community problems will decrease and we can indeed enjoy these exciting times in Europe.
