A natural right the ignorant opinions expressed by some of the respondents to your informal Survey on the second amendment published Sun Day cannot go unanswered. The founding fathers included a specific reference in the Bill of rights prohibiting the Federal and state governments from in fringing on the right of the people to keep and Bear please note the use of the right. The founding fathers recognized that this specific right was a corollary to the natural right of self defense. A gun and some rudimentary training makes a 90 Pound housewife the equal to a 250-Pound murderer or rapist who just finished a year in prison bulking up with the Aid of state of the Art weight training equipment at taxpayers expense. When Ordinary people Are Dis armed the physically weak Are at the mercy of the Strong. It is the Law of the Jungle. The framers of our Constitution which we have All sworn to support and defend against All enemies foreign and Domestic realized this fact crime is a problem in America but guns Are not its cause. A Well armed civilian population with Laws to protect the citizen in the exercise of his natural to self defense is a far better deterrent to crime than costly prisons and useless rehabilitation programs. The Safe and responsible use of firearms could easily and cheaply be taught in Public schools by incorporating this subject into the physical education Grams that we already have. Self defense is a natural right. To keep and Bear is a constitutional right. We As soldiers Are sworn to uphold and defend this right. Maj. Jared a. Kline Heidelberg Germany. Thumbs Down on picture again you have published the picture of a dead body. Again i oppose what you Are printing. When you did this before your reply was that you print the news. Unfortunately the senseless killing of innocent ple is news but i Don t want to see violence and gory pictures on the front Page of my newspaper. Could you not have a Little More respect for your readers after All we Are the ones who buy your newspapers. Judy Taylor Neu Briick Germany. Test mortally flawed a lot of controversy exists Over the Cycle erg ometry test get for fitness testing As Well it should. How Many overweight sedentary smokers have scored "4s" and "5s"? conversely airmen in outstanding Condi Tion who received awards last year Are now unfit for duty at least according to this test. Don t give up help is on the Way. A new study conducted by Auburn University at Montgomery ala., on 50 air University Stu dents concluded that the United states air Force get under predicted fitness by 21 percent in one or two categories based on our self imposed Standard. Cycle testing can be an effective Way of measuring or More correctly predicting fitness. But not the Way Usan has changed it. To effectively administer the Cycle test you have to stress the subject at least moderately. The perceived exertion score on the get is around three or four out of 20 and on the Treadmill 18 or 19. The test should take 12 minutes or so and should conclude with the subjects heart rate at 10 to 20 per cent below maximum. This procedure would Weed out the unexplainable High score and give those anxious types the exercise they need to show what kind of shape they Are in. Sitting on a Bike peddling slowly against very Light resistance for six minutes and then being told you failed just does t pass the logic test. It s time to admit the get is mortally flawed. Revamp it with a valid Cycle test and offer the old 1.5-mile run to those who re quest it. Maybe somebody at Brooks air Force base thinks we Are uninformed Fol Lowers but the word is out. An profile has a copy of the study i m just waiting for them to air it. Capt. John Jordan Ramstein a Germany.1. Faith is restored i am writing to thank Julie at the Pitburg tour office and the unknown person who recently restored my Faith in humanity by re turning my bag full of souvenirs. We recently took a trip out of Pitburg air base and were the last to be dropped off. When i opened the Luggage compartment and did t find my bag the Driver could not help us. Obviously someone had taken our bag at one of the previous stops. Vogel Weh Ramstein or Lan Stuhl. Hoping for the Best and not wanting to drive 2vi hours Home and then Back again the next Day we stayed the night there. Was All this Worth a bag of souvenirs at this Point it became More than a Bagful of sweatshirts to shirts prints music boxes postcards and personal belongings. I just had to know the whereabouts of my bag. I maintained my Faith. Before 10 a.m., i was at the tour office and luckily Julie was there. She was helpful in calling around to the various offices and asking about my bag. On her second Call to Vogel Weh it was Learned that indeed someone has returned the bag and i could drive there to pick it up. I would like to thank the person who re turned my bag and restored my Faith in humanity. I lust kept hoping they would realize that they d made a mistake and would do whatever it took to Correct it. Thank you for your efforts which have enabled me to relive my trip through my souvenirs As Well As keep a Little bit of Faith intact and tucked away to be Savoured and enjoyed at moments such As this. Brun sum Netherlands program 4on hold in a recent letter regarding the voluntary separation incentive special separation Benefit program the writer said that in the states soldiers Don t have a time lag in the Chain of command and that soldiers could hand carry their paperwork directly to department of the personnel come. I want to say that wherever there is a Chain of command you will encounter time lags in the Continental United states or in outside Continental United states. Maybe Washington ., soldiers can Hana carry their applications to per com but that does not mean they will be approved. I have worked with this program since january 1993, and i can Tell you a per com does not have separate require ments for soldiers from conus and sol Diers from Uconus. The requirements Are exactly the same. Also the writer mentioned the message that closed the program. First personnel come received the by 94 enlisted draw Down programs update dated . 9, 1993 on . 9, 1993.1 immediately faxed that message to All the major com mands in Europe. There May be a time lag of Days to receive a message but not weeks unless the commands Are not doing their Job. The Vii sub program is not dead just on i am confident As soon As any message comes out All Mac oms in Europe will know it within two Days. Spec William a. Frobe sch Atzingen Germany " . Thank heaven for bbl As a group of us were sitting around the lunch table the topic of Rush Limbaugh came up for discussion. After a few weeks of Rush most at the table said they had better things to do than to listen to some fat racist Buffoon spend an hour telling listeners How wonderful he is or rationalizing Why he May say Nasty things about people of color but is really not a racist. Others in our group said that to give us Back the jazz beat Gram would be much More positive be cause of the improvement in intellectual and political stimulation. One very thoughtful fellow in our group wanted us All to do As the ditto Heads did and write our congressional representatives to complain that we get unbalanced programming and demand that american forces network include the Howard Stern show. He said it worked for them and at least Howard Stern would present a More Well balanced program with something controversial and interesting and would t spend the time deprecating minorities. Personally i Don t see what s the big Deal with Rush. If the an audience is unwilling or incapable of thinking for themselves i think they should have a Cess to someone like Rush to give them the opinion they need. It does make one think though that maybe these Are the people the Navy Captain talked about in his remark that military members Are qualified in doily selection but not much of anything else. As for me i d prefer Howard Stern but for now i just want to thank an for putting the Rush Limbaugh show on in the evenings. In an Effort to find some sanity i was inspired to tune around and now i listen to the British broadcasting corp. At 94.8 Khz. The programming is really much More interesting and directed at people who have minds of their own.
