The fast moving up to 11 knots tidal Waters Are notorious for their peril to shipping but when sea conditions Are not threatening visitors can take a trip around the Island and to the Bird sanctuaries in a Small boat. The Alderney railway is the Only Standard gauge railway to survive in the Channel islands. It was opened in 1.847 to haul Stone to the Harbor from manner Quarry. Now the line carries tourists from Braye Road outside Ste. Anne to the Quarry and Back. The Island s main event is milk and punch sunday the first sunday in May. The Best place to walk along the water is co to Bay a Long expanse of Rock strewn Shore interrupted by successive crescents of Sandy Beach. Halfway Between Sark and Guernsey is Herm it a 1 i mile Long by 1/i-mile-wide Island that shelters St Peter port. A walking tour of Herm takes about three hours.
