A Jim Brock the Arizona state baseball coach whose Battle with cancer forced him to miss much of the recent College world series died sunday night. He was 57. Brock one of College baseball a winning St coaches died of liver and Colon cancer said Mark Brand sports information director at Arizona state. Brock sat out Asu s game against Oklahoma at Omaha neb., on june 6 because of a reaction to Medicine. A the next Day he returned to Tempe on the advice of his family doctor and checked into a Hospi Tal in Mesa where he remained until his death. His team was eliminated in a 13-5 loss to eventual Champion Oklahoma on thursday Brock was the Only coach to win National championships with american legion Junior College and major coils go teams. He had a 1,100-440 record in 23 years at Asu. During his tenure the Sun devils won two College world series titles and finished second four times in 11 other trips to the National tournament. Athletic director Fred Miller hired Brock in 1972 on a Tempo Rary basis but the Sun devils 04-6 record and runner up finish in the cos paved the Way for a permanent position. A his 1976 team set the school record for victories with a 6510 Mark and the 1977 squad 5712 won the National championship and earned Brock Nis first coach of the year selection by the american association of College baseball coaches. He got his second cos title and second Pacba National Honor in 1981. He was a Phoenix native and 1958 graduate of Arizona state. Brock had his Only losing sea son 31-35 in 1985, a year after the Mcaa stripped Arizona state of 14 baseball scholarships because of irregularities in the teams work study program. The cancer was diagnosed in july 1993. Later that month doctors removed 80 percent of Brocks liver 10 inches of his Colon and three Lymph nodes. Then he underwent months of chemotherapy. Brock appeared to be in Good health for the Jan. 27, 1994, opener. But in March a liver blockage resulted in jaundice and Brocks condition worsened rapidly.
