While the aging Trio from Texas does t personally offer much sex Appeal the Young female dancers touring with the group made quite a stir during the 90-minute concert at the westfalen Halle in Dortmund Germany last Friday. Six absolutely gorgeous texans teased the capacity crowd of More than 16,000 by flaunting their scantily Clad bodies in several numbers that appeared to come straight out of a Classy men s club. It was hot and steamy enough without them that night. But Zzz top a guitarist and Lead vocalist Billy Gibbons bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard a gave its male fans what they be grown accustomed to seeing in videos voluptuous women in various stages of undress. On tour with Zzz top was the ramp a based hard Rock group Whitesnake which with David Coverdale leading the charge has re formed the Ever changing group to promote this year s Whitesnake s greatest hits album on Geffen records. Zzz top now 24 years Strong is known for its High Energy Rock that draws from country blues. The group was touring Germany prompting its latest album Antenna on Warner Bros. Antenna is Zzz top s 13th album and the first in four years. Some say it s a return to the group s Early sound which got it labelled As a full throttle Boogie band. At the Dortmund show three Black boxes about 10 feet High and 6 feet wide with a Large White Circle in front sat above and around the drum set. These innocuous props were used to showcase the girls As they mane Vered through the circles on and off stage. On the third song using the affect of Back lighting the crowd was thrown into a frenzy when four silhouetted figures appeared a two in the Middle Box a and danced erotically. Halfway through the concert the girls reappeared and were introduced As the Lone Wolf horns. Once again another stunning visual gimmick was used As the dancers played fake saxophones that were outlined with Black lights As were Hill s and Gibbons special guitars. The crowd heard wailing saxes thanks to taped music. The last song of the regular concert Zzz top s 1984 hit legs again featured the dancers. Some were lying Down moving their legs up and Down Back and Forth. Some were shaking their a Well you know a other attention getters. Every time the women appeared their performance a and Zzz top s a was met with a thunderous applause. The crowd just loved it. All together Zzz top played a 15-song set composed of new songs and favourites like cheap sunglasses just cot Back from baby a and Gimme All your lovin. This was followed by a two song encore that featured the Boogie oriented 1973 hit la Grange and the rip roaring hit from a year later Tust. Gibbons guitar playing was exceptional offering riffs a that gave each song its own identity quite an accomplishment within the realm of blues. To see Gibbons and Hill is kind of comical. After All they could pass As Brothers with their Long beards Caps and cheap sunglasses. They even mimic each other s Steps and guitar movements to the beat of the music a a beat reinforced by the hard hitting on the Money drumming style of Beard. As Beard said earlier that night at a press conference the reason the group is still together is because they enjoy performing live. But the Money classic cars and Beautiful women can t Hurt either Here they were three Middle aged texans a walking Arm in Arm with six stunning Young a women also from the Lone Star state. The Trio announced it will be returning for another european tour in november and december. And then just As they came they went a escorted by the dream ladies from Texas and leaving their questioners eagerly awaiting their return a. Maybe it was simply age. Either Way at some Point the formerly greatest Rock n Roll band in the world became the worlds greatest oldies act. Turning that around May be next to impossible and it wont be done with mediocre albums like voodoo lounge released this week. The disc is professional occasionally entertaining but rarely compelling a kind of like Paul Mccartney a latest records. Part of the problem is pacing. The album opens with three rockers two of them subpar and stops dead in its tracks with four straight slow songs. Most interesting is the worst a country weeper tenderly croaked by Keith Richards. By then boredom and disappointment have seeped in. Those feelings Arentt erased by some of the better moments in the albums second half. This is the stones first album without charter bassist Bill Wyman replaced by hired hand Darryl Jones. The change does no to affect the franchise at All. Take away Mick daggers rubbery vocals the stinging guitars of Richards and Ron Wood or the reliable Backbeat of Charlie Watts and the stones would never be the same. But the franchise appears tired in songs like Sparks will Fly and you got me flocking the latter a Pale imitation of its Only Rock n Roll. Jagger is lost in a Little boy world neither speaking to his own generation like a Bonnie Raitt or Paul Simon or convincing the Young turks that he a still Tough. The stones Are at their Best when they swing the barely rocking rolling stones from left Keith Richards Ron Wood Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts. Instead of just Rock something of which they re More than capable with jazz aficionado Watts in Drums. To that end this albums highlight is buried on the albums 1.5th and last song. Mean disposition Cooks with Chuck Leavells roadhouse piano and Richards and Wood exchanging fluid guitar lines. Jagger grunts growls and soars in this swipe at a woman with a bad attitude. They All sound As if they re having a great time. If Only they could sustain an album like this maybe the stones would matter again.
