Son left out of list we Are writing to Correct an omission. Our son Seth newcomer should have been included in your pages honouring the valedictorians and salutatorian graduating this Spring from me department of defense dependents schools in Europe we Are quite sure this was not your mis take but that of Kaiserslautern Ameri can High school. Since Seth could not attend the commencement exercise for Kahs our fam ily returned to the states the end of May because of military retirement one of his friends sent him the stars and stripes and the Kahs commencement program. We had been told that Seth and Matilda Prouty tied for valedictorian honors at Kahs. There was no recognition Given to Seth in either the commencement ceremony or the printed Gram. Seth is a Fine Young Man and we Are both extremely proud of him. He worked very hard the last four years to graduate no. 1 academically in his class. We feel he certainly should have been credited with the Honor he earned and deserved. Linda newcomer York a. Religion politics mix this is in response to the preposterous remarks by Anthony Lewis in his july 19 column Christian right keeps up attack on Lewis has obviously not studied history .very.well, for he cites the Constitution As establishing a secular system of govern ment. Here is a quote by George Washington during his april 30, 1789, inauguration we ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the rules of order and he then concluded by asking for a divine there Are no. Rules of order in a secular society. So what Are the rules of order and right that Washington was referring to the answer is unquestionably the Bible. We have become a pathetic Shell four former selves. We now have to Ger to other countries with our hat in Hanol Tobey them for Money to save our Dollar. Criminals have free reign to terrorize without fear of retribution. Our school systems Are nothing More than Liberal indoctrination centers and Breeding grounds for social unrest. We also continue to get entangled in military operations As the United nations seeks to take away our National identity and sovereignty. Soon they will be dictating to us rather than requesting our help. The sad fact is that christians have sat idly by and Swal Lowed the line that religion and politics do not mix. We have chosen to accept bad policies without lifting up our , however a change is coming. Christians Are now beginning to get involved in government again and suddenly we Are radicals who Are going to impose our morality on everyone else. A typical response comes from the july 23 article on the religion Page of the stars and stripes by a Man who demonstrates his ignorance of history by saying he is concerned that the religious right would Start trying to write the Laws out of the where does he think the Laws that we live under came from to begin with. John b. Mittl cide Ramstein a Germany what s Good for Goose. Two stories appeared june 28 on Page 3 of the stars and stripes. The first one was about the army Captain who was convicted of rape forcible sodomy Adul Tery indecent language indecent acts As Sault and conduct unbecoming an officer. The second one was about the Span Dah Lem airman who was convicted of Drunken driving theft of a european Driver s License fleeing the scene of an Accident and being Drunken and disorderly. I do not in any Way condone or agree with what these two did. My problem with it All is that this airman pretty much got the Book thrown at him while the Captain walks he is out of the army but he just walks. What s wrong with this picture so what is the glaring difference be tween these two parasites.? one is enlisted one is an officer. While11 do not disagree with the airman s punishment i am appalled at the ruling that was handed Down in the officer s Case. Crime crosses All boundaries in society. It also crosses Between the enlisted and officer ranks. The military supposedly prides itself with the fact that every walk of life has a Chance to succeed but leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to punishing of fenders fairly across the Board. Landrey St. Petersburg times Paris i love August. I also hate August. In comparison with some ple s marriages this love hate relation ship is pretty simple having to do with living in Paris and being mixed up with foreign affairs. I have loved this August Ever since last sunday when shoving the dog out of the Way i was barely Able to squeeze a foot on to my Balcony and look Down on the Street four floors below. It s the Only Street in the neighbourhood where you can Park free without having to put a Coin in the Slot. For most of the year it rings with the loud quarrels of parisians competing to squeeze their cars in a space or the repeated honking of some poor soul caught there by someone else double parking. Sometimes we think we hear gunshots. Last sunday there were empty spaces up and Down the Street. As always on the pre August weekend the Competition had switched to France s freeways backed up for Miles by parisians All trying to get out of town simultaneously for the August vacation. With the parisians gone Paris is a place where you can wander peacefully hand in hand and sometimes get into the wonderful museums Parks movies and restaurants that stay open for the tourists and the you trans the people who get left behind. How peaceful. How calm., but where in the hell did the Baker go and the Butcher and the Guy who Sells newspapers what if the television Breaks Down on second thought that May not be so bad because there s even More old serial sludge on it than usual. My goodness even Columbo is there speaking French. And Perry Mason. And the Guy who Wasag Man in Chicago. Still we All went out for a walk on sunday found a Park Bench and there was nobody around to catch the dog doing it on the grass. And later there were Only about 10 other people seeing the latest american movie but just when i get to Loving August something bad happens somewhere. Either i feel obliged to go look and write about it or suffer pangs of conscience for not going to look and write about it this August an awfulness is going on in Rwanda. As Long As it was Only the genocide of maybe a million people few governments seemed very moved. Only when the cameras caught up when other millions fled and began drop Ping like flies from hunger thirst cholera and now dysentery in refugee Camps As big As the Bronx were reluctant govern ments forced to move. This is nothing to spoof. Yet instead of being there or writing again about it i am climbing into my car and following the parisians who have fled to the pleas ures of mountains country and beaches. In Between catastrophes August used to be the silly season when people sighted such things As Loc Luness monsters and abominable snowmen. Those were the Days. I now cringe when the doubtful idyll comes around. What will happen this time Loving August i hate feeling guilty and depressed that Man being Man life will always be thus and be Here waiting in september.
