Pink Floyd s Saucer Ful of secrets live by Anita Gosch staff writer aging on in quiet desperation is the English Way the time is gone the song is Over thought i d something More to say Pink Floyd sings on the dark Side of the Moon. More than 20 years after the album s release Floyd s song May be ending for some but the British band s show is far from Over. Despite scathing reviews of Floyd s new release the division Bell some 65,000 fans at the group s recent show in Cologne Germany left no doubt that the time is not gone for the aural and visual feast that is Pink Floyd in concert. A predominantly older crowd packed the sold out main Geisdorfer station fans in their 30s and 40s, along with pockets of Long haired teens All swaying to the psychedelic sounds. They came they said mainly for the Light show a spectacle that combines flares fireworks multicoloured lasers surrealistic slides and videos and giant inflatable pigs that loom Over the crowd. They re unique As far As show is concerned said Cerrit Scharbau 19, of Munster. I just stared at the stage totally As fans were still filing into the Arena the delicate sounds of Floyd resounded Over the quadraphonic loudspeakers Birds Sweeting an air plane thundering around the stadium before crashing in a deafening Roar until the band members slipped unobtrusively onto the stage for their nearly three hour show. For the opening number Floyd reached Back to its infant years in London with the space epic astronomy Dominie from the 1967 debut album the Piper at the Gates of Dawn. The group then quickly moved on to songs from division Bell an album that topped the billboard charts for four weeks but has been criticized As a soporific rehash of Early material. Some critics and longtime fans blame the departure of Floyd co founder and Bass player Roger Waters in 1984, saying he took the soul of the band when he left. Fans in Cologne had generally favourable reviews of the new release but judging from the crowd s response most preferred the earlier stuff. A thunderous applause burst through the stadium during the opening Riff of one of these Days from 1971/s meddle. The applause was capped Only by the Roar of the audience As two giant inflatable pigs Rose High next to the stage spotlight eyes shooting out Over the crowd. The trip Back in time continued As guitarist David Gilmour keyboardist Rick Wright and drummer Nick Mason backed by five musicians and three backup singers provided a sing and dance along session with familiar tunes from the 70s and 80s.As darkness fell Over the stadium Green lasers shot across the sky and a giant circular screen Rose above the stage for videos illustrating Shine on you crazy Diamond and time. A crowd favorite came with Money from 1973 s dark Side of the Moon an album that stayed on billboard s top 200 Chart for a record 15 years. And the 1980 Klo. 1 teen Anthem another Brick in the a had cheering adults pounding fists into the air and shouting along with the words we Don t need no education a disappointing Muddy version of comfortably numb followed but Floyd made up for it with the encore. Run like hell from the Wall ended the show with a Brilliant flurry of liquid Light synchronized lasers bursts of flame shooting up from the stage and a mini fireworks display for a True Floyd Ian grand finale. Pink Floyd has toned Down its stage gimmickry Over the years. Past Tours have included an array of inflatable figures hovering above the crowd along with an actual Wall built Brick by Brick across the stage in 1980 s Wall concerts. But for fans in Cologne Floyd still puts on one Heck of a show. Awesome great said staff Jeff Gier 33, of Ramstein a. They still have the old flair said his buddy tech. Sgt. Jeff App 35. It seems Pink Floyd will always have something to say. Review Washington is easy listening at Small show by Jimi Jones staff writer with ail due respect to Keith Washington it would be a mistake to Call his recent show in Heidelberg Germany a huge Success. Though no fault of his the show at the Village Pavilion in Patrick Henry Village set up to accommodate at least 1,500 people Drew a comparatively sparse 300 people. But the show went on with Washington promoting his Sophomore album for West records you make it easy. Judging from Washington s promotional photos and his recorded voice one might imagine him somewhere Between Luther Vandross and Johnny Gill in size and voice or one Heck of a hunk. In reality he s a Small Well built hunk with a Mellow voice that oozes Romance. And Washington a native of motown s Hometown Detroit uses that to his advantage when he Calls women to the Edge of the stage holds their hands gazes into their eyes gently caresses their faces All the White crooning words of love and pain. Washington has had plenty of time to perfect his act having worked As a supporting vocalist As a teen Ager for the dramatics and backing up the Jacksons and Miki Howard. Washington took the audience through a Short set Abou seven songs a mixture of cuts from. Easy and his 1991 debut album make time for love. As he introduced cuts he shared with the Washington audience his trials in the love game acknowledging that he had failed several times at love and that those romantic situations had inspired several of his songs. People want to hear Good music and that s what i want to continue putting out something people can really relate to Washington said. Let s talk about love and overcoming mistakes. Everybody s been in love. Everybody s been Hurt. I be been there. When you stir a person s emotions with a song. Man that s touching their soul. You can t get much deeper than women in the audience requested the last two songs his debut single kissing you and no one from the current cd. Kissing you was introduced on Abc s daytime soap general Hospital As a romantic theme for the show. Washington also landed a role on that show As Well As acting roles on Fox television s Martin and a Small role in the movie poetic Justice. Before Washington took the stage the audience was entertained by two local musical acts Savoir Faire and air Force staff soft. Keith Sibley who is rapidly gaining popularity As a Singer and a sought after opener for professional entertainers touring Europe. The three act show was repeated in Hanau the next night where spectators say a larger and More enthusiastic crowd openly expressed their appreciation. The stars and Stripe Friday August 12,1994 17
