Hail and Farewell i read recently that the Wiesbaden Mainz Post will soon merge with an expanded area support group newspaper. I also know the Frankfurt chronicle s last Issue is sept. 1. With the Frankfurt military Community going away the chronicle s demise though sad is understandable. And i realize newspaper consolidations Are budget driven but i wonder if the individuals who allocate funds fully under stand the morale and command information importance of a Community newspaper and the powerful information tool it affords a commander. We already have a very Good general newspaper in the stars and stripes. Ask papers will become More and More generalized also to satisfy their diverse communities and personalization for individual communities will be lost. I am the Public affairs officer at the formerly 97th general Hospital/51st combat support Hospital . Army health clinic in Frankfurt. During my time Here this Hospital expanded to twice its bed capacity and moved some very important services paediatrics for instance out of the building to other parts of the Community in preparation for the Gulf War. We changed our name and our mis Sion. We were put on the hit list for in activation As a Hospital Drew Down serv ices and became a health clinic. We ended 49 years of comprehensive Hospital services requiring Community members to seek inpatient and emergency care in local German hospitals. While these things were rather insignificant in the greater scheme of world events justifiably receiving minimal coverage from the stars and Stripe they were of massive importance to the Mem Bers of the Frankfurt military Community. Through All of this the Frankfurt chronicle s excellent staff kept the Community apprised of every change not just the health care Arena but in every aspect of Community life. The earliest archived edition of the occupation chronicle As it was then called is dated March 14, 1947. This great and award winning Community newspaper has been supporting soldiers and families in Frankfurt for nearly half a Century and is still doing that today until sept. 1, when the last -30 will go on the last copy and another tradition be comes history. Judith Williams Frankfurt Germany a head for prices in response to despair Over hair fare aug. 4 As an experienced hair stylist of seven years i would like to shed some Light on a few things. Paying $10.60 for a haircut is quite a Deal both on and off base Here in Ger Many As Well As in the states. I m not one to stick up for the army and air Force Exchange service but i can probably give you a Good explanation on Why Long hair costs More. First you went to a Salon hair stylists and Barbers Are not one in the same As Many might think. Ask the cafes Salon How much a men a Cut is. I m sure it s More than at the Barber s. Second Active duty men get their hair Cut More often say every two to three weeks to meet regulations. Women both Active and civilian go longer say six weeks to even six months. So in a nine week period a male or female with Short hair would pay $15 to $20. Females with Long hair have paid $10.60. A haircut is. Not of exact value and Quality As say a can of Coke which costs 25 cents at the commissary 40 cents at the shop Pette and 60 cents in a machine. Haircuts differ from stylist to stylist anyplace to place. Most people go for a Good Cut first and the Price next not the other Way around we must remember this Rule for Good Quality and value you get what you j Jodilyn Silvasman Dahlem a Germany excellent medical care my wife and i recently visited our daughter and family in Heidelberg. During the trip i became ill with a peptic bleeding ulcer. I am a retired chief warrant officer with 2&/i years service. Due to the recent cutbacks i did not know what to expect in the Way of treat ment and care. Upon arrival at the Hei Delberg emergency room i found them to Welcome me with concern arid kindness. I wish to express my appreciation to the doctors and nurses for care and treat ment that allowed me to continue my vacation with my family in Europe. This experience helped me to feel i m still a part of the military. Old o. Biggs Atmore Ala. Editor s note we encourage our readers especially those who have never submitted a letter to write to us. We loved Bruce and we were delighted with his Mildred called Millie. Bruce left us for a Job at the Jacksonville times Union and the newsroom was never As much fun again. We remembered when he found that nobody was running for de Kalb county Surveyor he wrote in his name and got the Job we also delighted in his bout with the Campbell soup co Bruce liked the company s split pea soup and one night when he got Home from the late shift he started painting his Kitchen and decided to nourish himself with a can of the soup. Millie was t there then As i remember and he did t know than to put the unopened can in a pot of water to heat it up. The can exploded sending Green stains All Over his newly painted Walls. Bruce complained to the Campbell soup co. The company s attorney sensing a suit called on Bruce offering a Cash settlement. Bruce said All he wanted was another can of split pea soup. The baffled attorney left and officials of the company started calling. What could they do to make the situation right another can of split pea soup said Bruce.
