The appearance of advertising in this publication including inserts or supplements does not constitute endorsement by the department of defense or the stars and stripes of the products or services , troops come first it is heartening to read of. Deputy defense Secretary John Deutch a plan to emphasize troop issues at the expense of weapons programs. America has always won its Battles not because of weapons but because of the courage and determination of the soldiers sailors airmen and marines entrusted with her defense. My eyes Well up when i see a column of spirited Well led soldiers. A similar column of my tanks or a flight of f-16s, while impressive inspires a lesser reaction. Our leaders Are right to emphasize soldiers it should never be otherwise. M pay raises Are important As Are child care centers and housing but More important is knowing that our leaders have our nations and soldiers interests at heart when they make hard decisions about budgets. I Welcome this new expression of the priority that soldiers welfare has in our administration. I never doubted that the administration Felt otherwise. That May sound naive in Light of the Many budget cuts and draw Down actions we have in Dunedin recent years but i for one am heartened by the Deputy defense Secretary a bravado in taking on the powerful defense Industry and its expensive allies in Congress. It remains to be seen whether the administration can make Good on this new affirmation of what has been the right answer All along or if the wealthy defense Industry can wrestle the Money out of our child care centers and housing and Back into their Over privileged behind schedule and poor performing programs. Time will Tell and in a not holding my breath master sgt. William Russell Heidelberg Germany ing any responses he apparently was afraid to see. Do not blame the Apo system or any of its hard working soldiers airmen sailors and civilians Lor slow mail and late magazines. Publishers of magazines Send them the most inexpensive Way they can to save a Buck not caring that you re at an Apo. This has nothing to do with the service provided by the Apo some . Magazines Are printed in Europe for their european customers thus providing fast mail service. However customers with Apo mailing addresses Are required to receive these magazines from the states. This May be the reason the writers Friend in Switzerland has received this Magazine before he did. As for his mis routed mail most mail is presorted by civilians of the . Postal service in the states at various Apos. Also Over the past few years Apos have been been changing their zips thus making it very possible for these same non Apo personnel in the states to make a routing error. The men and women of our Apo system deserve our thanks for doing a demanding and difficult Job. This goes for All of the transportation units that assist in the movement of this mail at All hours of the Day and night and in All weather. Incidentally i am not affiliated with the Apo system. Staff sgt. Kenneth e. Gallup n Izmir Turkey allow me to have someone at Home Send it for most items i either order out of Cata logs Call my mom and have her Send it or shop on the Economy. All three Are usually cheaper and of better Quality than what i could get at the Post Exchange. And when we Are stationed in the states i never use the pm since Wal Mart Kmart and Sams Are always cheaper and always have in Stock what i am looking for. A. A. A a a and As for customer service our pm manager seems to make it a habit to argue with the customer. It appears that As far As cafes is concerned the saying is a the customer is never being Short on staff is not an acceptable reason for being rude to the customer even if the customer is rude to you. At Many places you would be fired on the spot for talking to a customer the Way Many cafes employees talk to the pub lie. Fortunately not All employees Are this Way and you get to know who the Friendly ones Are and that a whom you Deal with. And before someone goes off about my not knowing what in a talking about i worked for cafes for a year and quit to pc. Why is this person making excuses for the army and air Force Exchange service i am at the end of our third tour Here in Germany. For nine years i have heard and read the same complaints about cafes. Poor customer service and High prices seem to be the norm., these complaints have nothing at All to do with the draw Down. Nine years ago there was no draw Down. Commentary Simpson defense tries the racial card by Scripps Howard news service los Angeles police detective Mark Fuhrman who produced a bloody Glove from behind . Simpsons estate May Harbor racist views. So far the evidence consists of Fuhrmann a request to be moved from a beat plagued by minority gangs and an sex girlfriends word that he once bad mouthed mixed race couples. In any Case prejudice is not a capital crime a like say a double homicide. Perhaps to help clarify who is on trial in his courtroom Superior court judge Lance Ito has denied motions by Simpsons lawyers to Root through the personnel files of Fuhrman and other officers involved in the investigation of the Nicole Simpson Ronald Goldman slayings. The lawyers seek indications of bigotry. But Ito who As a japanese american presumably is Alert to color based injustices said his review of the policemen a records uncovered no a information pertinent to issues in this us Ito scotched an apparent de Fen Effort to play the race card and to make Simpson in the City of the deadly 1992 riots into another Rodney King victim of neanderthal cops. If As the new yorker reports the defense teams Core strategy May be to argue that Fuhrman planted the incriminating Glove at the football stars pad Simpsons attorneys could do worse than Poison the juror Pool with loud accusations of police racism. A unfortunately that Pool is probably already tainted by the racial polarization of . Society. A Gallup poll finds that 60 percent of Blacks think Simpson stands unfairly accused of murder while Only 15 percent of Whites believe that. Among callers to Black radio shows of the More incendiary sort it is gospel that Fuhrman planted the bloody Glove. Nor Are the callers allayed by an internal los Angeles police department probe that concluded such a Frame Job was All but logistically impossible. Regrettably blatant appeals to racial fraternity often work. For example the Radical lawyer William Kunstler has won acquittals for Black defendants by arguing before multiracial juries that Black suspects Are political prisoners of a racist state. Simpson deserves a fair trial including a vigorous defense. You can to blame f. Lee Bailey for earning his retainer though Ito seems determined to keep the proceedings properly focused. But How ironic. Simpson often United the races a whether they were 11 Black and White opponents chasing his Jersey Down a football Field or a stadium full of Many hued fans cheering his exploits. Now Simpson has a new. Set of blockers who evidently Arentt above running the old division play. You Tom to see me sir / ves Campbell. Dean rumf1emeyer. Was just in Here. She.
